Interesting Encounter
Find a Conversation

It is always amazing to me the way a chance meeting can lead to an impactful moment.
For reason I won't bother going into, my company is in a position to do some rather signifcant work for our school district. Due to the nature of my position, I took part in a "meeting of the minds" today, that included 10 of the most powerful members of the district's administrative staff. Including two members of the school board, both of whom I was already acquainted with. The first, I met at a function I attended for work. I had no clue who she was, but when our conversation turned to education, I mentioned that I had two children with special needs. She immediately introduced me to another board member, whose son has AS. We talked, I expressed my concerns, they followed-up, etc.
The topic of conversation for today's meeting was the need for cohesive communication throughout the district. These two board members, for all intent and purpose, opened the door for me to express the difficulties I've had working with the district.
When all was said and I done, I was able to clearly articulate a few of the many problems the school district faces. But most importantly, these people really did listen. They were stunned, and in some ways, horrified by my experiences. After the meeting, they all approached me to express their gratitude for sharing my story.
Here's hoping they follow through.

Amy,
What an awesome opportunity. It must have felt so good to be listened to. Hopefully this will open the door for changes within your district, and give you some powerful back up. Great job!
Valerie

Amy,
That is so cool! It must have been especially powerful for the people you met because you did not seek this encounter and come in to their presence complaining about the schools. Was there any talk of specific changes that might be made?

Amy,
Fate takes us to funny places sometimes. Good for you for makign the most of the situation without being aggressive.
Good luck with it. I hope they follow up. Please keep us posted.
