Our very best friends in the world have a special little boy who just turned 10. We've all always known he was "different," and accepted him and loved him.

Her pediatrician should be able to refer her to a good developmental pediatrician who will be able to help determine what is going on. In my case, my HMO had a developmental assessment group that included a developmental ped, a speech therapist, occupational therapist, and geneticist who did one long evaluation that lasted about 4 hours in order to diagnose him with autism. A friend of mine had a son who has ADD, but before they got the diagnosis, they were not sure what was wrong and her doctor sent her to a large hospital that had a similar type of team to help diagnose behavioral and developmental issues in children. I cannot believe the ped referred her to a website!

I believe that a child psychologist may also be able to help with the diagnosis, but since that is not who I used, I am not too sure about it. She needs to call her ped back, or talk to another ped who can make a recommendation for who to contact for evaluation.

I am sorry she is going through this. Please invite her to come to this site if you would like. We may be able to help answer some questions for her and give her support. Although there is no "cure" for these sorts of issues, there is a lot of therapy out there that can help her son. My son is doing a therapy called RDI (relationship development intervension) that can help a lot with improving social interactions for children who are autistic or have Asp. syndrome. There are also other therapies out there. Unfortunately, most therapies can be expensive and are not covered by medical insurance. The school district may have some help they can offer though, once he is diagnosed.

I hope that helps.
