Hooray, hooray, hooray!
Well, it's Day 3 of Malcolm's 1st mainstream (experience) Day Camp and so far so good. A few blips in the road, the first 2 days his anxiety was very high by the end of the day and he needed lots of letdown in the evening. Long day 9:30 - 4:00. The silly camp scheduled a fire drill the 2nd day --- Don't know why the possibility of fire drills slipped my mind, Malcolm HATES fire drills. He apparently held it together until almost the end of fire drill, then cried, but managed to pull himself together and calm himself. That's my guy!!! He is pretty proud of himself, and today he went back eager to try again.
I'm still holding on to the ESY registration in case he needs a fallback, I have it all arranged with his ASD elemenary school principal. BUT it's looking like Malcolm could have a rockin' summer and stay in Day Camp through 3rd week in August. I continue to cross my fingers.
I teach in the same facility where his Day Camp is (different section of building, so no overlap). 2 of my students saw him in the halls with his Camp group (the Lions), and reported he was laughing and joking and teasing the girls with the other boys!
I walked in tonight (Day 3) and asked how his day at camp had been and he threw his fist in the air and exclaimed "Great!" And told me all about it.....
Whooo-hoooo. I've been so nervous for so long that I just decided to write and celebrate a little. He's just come so very far this year. I am so very, very proud of him!!!!!!!
