Questions about fish oil...

I'm thinking about starting Chase on fish oil to help his concentration problems and his hyperactivity. I've visited a few websites but am confused about how much to give him and what should be given in combination with it. If anyone knows of a good website please let me know. Thanks in advance, Vicky

There is a good site called Autism Coach (www.autismcoach.com). Of course they will try to sell you their brand of fish oil and other suppliments, but they also give some good info about what to look for in a suppliment and what to use in conjunction with others.
The Coreomega site may also have some good info. We use Coreomega with Cassian. The family size box is a pretty good deal. They recommend giving it once a day, but I only give it to him about every 2-3 days. Coreomega mixes well with yogurt, pudding, juice, and other "fruity" tasting foods. It has an orange flavor.

I have been using fish oil for a while with the kids. I found the most information actually from a study done for bipolar and omega 3's on what doses to give. They recomend 1000mg per day of I think the DHA. Most 1000mg pills only have about 180mg of DHA. I gave about 2 of those per day. I just switched to nordic naturals which is much more potent and more pure. 1 of the ultra or 2 of the regular caps are about 650 DHA per day.
You do need to get a good quality omega. Many of the "fishy" tasting ones are because the oil is rancid and if not distilled may have mercury. Some of the good brands are nordic naturals, carlsons and coromega. There are some others too. For a better price, Trader Joe's brand is molecularly distilled and much cheaper. The nice thing about the more expensive ones is you have a bit more choice in how it comes. The trader Joe's one is the typical big capsule and has 180mg DHA.
We tried a generic costco brand one last time and I really notice a difference when I went back to the more expensive ones. Nordic naturals are about $15 a bottle of 60 for the regular omega 3's, and $26 for the ultra.
