This is again another update on Malcolm (age 8, PDD-NOS) and the mainstream Day Camp week # 2... He is doing so well!!! This is so exciting. He's had some anxiety, a few nightmares, but is managing anyways. He did start sleeping in our bed again and that has actually helped alot with him getting more rest, cuddling with us like he used to when he was small (the good ole nighttime OT). The counsellors report that he has had a few upsets there, but also report that he is able to calm himself fairly easily, and has made a deal with one lovely young counsellor that he will indicate to her if he needs a "chill" break and she will help him out. The campers have gone on trips around the City to Botanical Gardens and Zoo, he's been in a play and was class leader of the drama group. And he seems to be actually making new friends and having lots of fun, staying connected and involved all day, which is just thrilling to me.
His biggest challenge is sports, where he gets overloaded and has trouble competing when overloaded, but he is determined to do well and will NOT let me come help out ... I asked. And he doesn't want to quit. He said that it is hard because there are so many kids on the opposing teams and he has trouble sometimes. And then he went and signed up for EXTRA sports as his elective for the next 2 weeks. Amazing.
I know it helps alot that his best friend is there with him and in the same Camp Group. When his buddy was a little late this AM, I could see his anxiety riding up some. But when his buddy arrived, they hugged and started some imaginary boat game together, and half their group of boys and girls joined in with them!!! I almost cried right on the spot.
Right now he is on the phone to his girlfriend who he wants to marry, who moved away last summer. He told her about camp, and that he wishes she was still here so they could go together...
Hooray!

That is so sweet with his girlfriend, lol. I am glad to hear he is having such a good time at camp. Sometimes they can just amaze us can't they. Things we thought we'd never see or they will never do. reminds me again to never underestimate the kids.
