has anyone made those big sensory bins of dry beans for their kids to explore? matt loves them and i can't find anywhere to buy them for less then $1 per pound in a bag. i checked bj's, sams and walmart--no luck

Sorry. I used rice. I used to hide stuff in it for the kids to find. They loved it, but got rice everywhere, of couse.
Is barley cheaper? It is probably a similar texture to beans, but will leave a fine powder on everything you put in the tub. (rice does that as well, but probably not to the same extent.
Other ideas (no idea of the cost): Specialty Indian or far/middle eastern stores may sell grains by the pound: lentils or split peas may work well for a sensory bin. Also a specialty Latin supermarket may have beans cheaper and in larger quantities than a more mainstream store.

If you were in the Southwest I'd suggest a farmer's market. I can get all the dried pinto beans I want very cheaply there. They tend to sell them by the 50lb bag. Other than that I'd check at a local health food co-op or an ethnic market. I know I could buy a lot of lentils really cheap at the middle eastern market in town....
