Anyone see results casien free?
| Mon, 09-19-2005 - 8:43am |
Hi all,
We just changed my 3 1/2 year old's diet to casien free. Havent seen any results after five days. Anyone out there have significant results when they've removed milk from the diet? Also is it worth it to go gluten free if we see no results with this? Thanks! Abbey

i did not see any staqgering results going gf or cf. however, it is still good to try gf even if cf doesn't make a difference. cf you should see results within a week. gluten free however can take up to 6 months. you could make your life much easier by checking out digestive enzymes. enzymes will help pick up all the stuff you can miss by diet alone, ie-corn, soy, etc.
some people swear by diet. personally, i didn't see any miraculous difference.

Hi there,
Just wanted to make sure you saw the thread under "question of the week" below that is called "dairy-free, wheat free, worth a try" or something like that. There is a lot of information there.
The reaction does seem to be very individual to each child. I think if you check out the thread from earlier this summer you will see the range of reactions and perspectives. For us, a version of the diet, vitamin supplements, and enzymes have made a difference. But we may be in the minority. I think the dramatic stories of children suddenly talking etc. are probably rather rare.
For my son it definitely was not the "silver bullet" and we did not see over-night reactions, but we saw true improvement. When we went dairy-free we saw mild improvement in about two weeks. After removing gluten, we saw an even better improvement, but over a period of a couple months. We contacted a nutritionist and have since settled into strict wheat-free, but allow oats. We are, I guess I would say, "low casein" as I do let him have soy cheese that has small amounts. If he has wheat now, however, I can really see a difference in his behavior. We also use enzymes, but have just started that. Others here have more experience with enzymes.
I think all the therapies (ST, OT etc.) are the first line of defense, but for some kids the dietary stuff helps. I believe the dietary changes have given DS an edge and taken away that "spacey" quality.
My son did have digestive issues, however, and that is part of this too.
