Is it common for kids on the spectrum to stop certain negative behaviors for long periods and then start doing them again. Jake has been really good with the echolia for about 3 months now but all of a sudden he's repeating me again. He did this before. He had stopped hand flapping for over 6 months and now he's doing that again. His eye contact is back to the way it was. It's so frustrating because just when you think you've finally gotton over one hurdle it comes back to bite you.I had him and still do (kinda)have him on the diet. The thing is we slipped a bit recently and started giving him things he's not supposed to have. Do you think it's related?

Oh yeah, especially in a time of stress this little quirks will re-emerge.

My daughter hasn't lined objects since a little in 3rd grade, and definitely in first. Prior to first grade she had stopped lining at around 4-5 and before that did it constantly. Suddenly she is lining again this year (6th). What is the similarity of all those times. Those were high stress times after the originally lining period. When she was young she had no other play skills and was still early in her walk. After that in each of 1st, 3rd and now in 6th grade she was under tons of stress and thus the lining came back.

I saw her doing it about a week ago. This time it is no big deal. I know it is how she is trying to deal with other stuff. What I want to do is get rid of the stress for her. If she needs to line to help do that I would rather have that then the meltdowns, which we are getting too.
