I just have to share. Today, when I went to pick up David from school (2nd grade), he said, "I have something to show Mrs. D. but I don't know where she is." Okay, that in itself is amazing, that he'd even be considering finding the principal and showing her something...so I figured this ought to be good. So, I briefly looked around at where I thought she might be, and managed to find her. David took two folded up pieces of paper out of his pocket and handed them to her. She looked at them and said, "Oh, David, you are WONDERFUL!!" She looked like she was going to kiss him on the top of his head, but then stopped herself.

I managed to get a peak at the papers. He had a "David had a great morning" and a "David had a Great Afternoon" certificates, with all the stuff checked off, like, "Raised his hand to share his good ideas", and "Followed Classroom Rules".

I'm so proud of him, for doing so well AND for happily sharing it with the principal.

He has EVEN been telling me about stuff they do in school. Like, he was talking about little tricks they use for learning about vowel sounds. This is *so* amazing. Last year was nothing like this...and in kindergarten...heck, he used to lick the teacher!

Wow!

Yes, sad but true. He really did lick the teacher. And her notebook. And other kids. It was actually quite a long time ago, the *first* time he started kindergarten. Because of the age cut-off date, he was 4 years and 9 months old. We figured that since he already was reading simple chapter books, and played with his one friend nicely, that there was no need for preschool. Boy were we in for a shock. The other kindergarteners looked and acted like college students next to him! We had no clue about ASD's or mood disorders. He had had some disturbing behaviors at home, but we didn't know why. Well, everything about school just freaked him out. He didn't know what to do AT ALL, and when he got stressed out, he did REALLY bizarre things. Well, okay, he did bizarre things even without being stressed out.

After a couple of weeks, the teacher recommended that we take him out of kindergarten and give him a year of preschool because he was "emotionally immature". That was the hardest, but best decision we ever made. Well, no...putting him on a mood stabilizer and anti-psychotic was the hardest/best decision, but that wouldn't be for another two years.

Oh, and thankfully he rarely licks anyone anymore. He still does some pretty weird, and dare I say, ANNOYING things, especially at home, but things are SOOOOOO much better than they were. Can't ask for more, really.
