Paula - about learning sensory stuff

Hi Paula
I'm in awe at what you know about sensory issues. When I read your recent post on the stimming thread I realised how much I have to learn about it. I have no idea what some of the stuff you talked about is, let alone how/why it works.
Where did you learn about sensory stuff? Could you recommend any books? (Hopefully they are on Amazon, because many of the specialist books I want aren't available in Australia)
thanks in advance
Aisha

Aisha,
I learned a lot of it from a book: "The Out of Sync Child" By Carol Stock Kranowitz (she also has an "OOSC has fun" book which follows on fron the original and has some great activities listed.
There is another book: "Sensory Integration and the Child" By Jean A. Ayres (or is it A. Jean Ayres?) -she was the lady who came up with the whole theory.
I also learned a lot from an OT who used to come and work with my dauhter at home twice per week. She taught me a lot of activities, and the theory behind them (I ask a lot of questions) I would ask her for clarification on things I had read in the book, etc.
I atended OT seminars at Peter's special preschool. I also learned quite a bit on the boards here on iVillage -especially about my *own* SID, and I basically sucked up knowledge any way I could.
There is a Sensory Integration Disorder on iVillage. I don't visit it, (I don't need help in this area), but you may want to check it out.
I hope this helps,
-Paula

Excellent. Thanks for the references.
All this sensory stuff is relatively new here in Australia. I mean, we know that stimming is about stress relief and that there it fills special purposes, but no OTs that I've ever used have really gotten into it as deeply as you discuss.
I know that there is one clinic who goes deeply into this type of thing, but it's in a different state. Hence my interest in the books.
If you have difficulty getting those books Down Under, drop me a lne through my profile, (put something meaningful in the subject, so I won't think you're spam) and we'll see if we can figure something out.
