Hi Everyone,
Just a small re-cap of my story. My 9 year old DD was recently DX with PDD. She has been receiving special educ. services since 9 months of age but unfortunately, not ABA. She is low functioning (IQ 70 ) but reads and comprehends close to grade level. Right now she has a 1:1 aide and is in a class of 27 children. She gets o/t, p/t, s/l, counseling and vision therapy and is pulled out in a small group for math once a day. This Sept. the SD did away with many of the self-contained classes under the umbrella of "Inclusion" so Rachel went from a 12:1:1 program to this mainstream class of 27. Needless to say, it wasn't working which is what prompted us to get an indep. eval. which finally led to the DX of PDD. That said, the ped. Psychiatrist said she would be willing to write a letter to the school district with Rachel's diagnosis and suggestions but she wants to know what kind of "wording" should be used. (She doesn't have much exp. with writing suggestions to SD). Right now, my "wish list" for summer services would be related services with some type of Behavioral Consultant to work on daily living skills which Rachel really needs help with (i.e answering a telephone, taking a shower, zippering up her coat). The summer programs here aren't great and I could put her in a terrific camp for PDD kids which is why I don't want the SD's summer program. As for Sept. I don't know if a special program for PDD kids would be best or if keeping her in her current program (but pulled out for both language arts and math)with Behavioral Consultant services would be best. Could someone PLEASE share with me some of the phrases your evaluators have used to get your children specific services related to their PDD or Autism DX. I am specifically looking for phrases that pinpoint an ABA type or TEEACH type program and phrases that pinpoint ABA or Behavioral Consultant services. I am so frustrated because I have a doctor who is somewhat willing to consider using my phrases to get Rachel services but we don't know how to phrase the "Recommendations" section of her report to get Rachel those services. Oh, we also need to justify them so if anyone has some phrases that were used to justify those services, that would be helpful as well. I hope this makes sense. I feel like I'm in this maze trying to navigate this school system and services and I keep getting "stuck". Any help would be greatly appreciated!
TIA,
Robin
