Hi coming out of lurkdom here. So far I have gatehred so much helpful info form this board. DS starts karate next week and the Stop-Plot-Go-So method is working wonderfully!
DS is 5.5 and not dxed but we have been through the neuropsych testing (12 hours) and DS has had 2 EEGS (one sedated one 24 hr ambulatory), genetic testing, and MRI and we've seen 1 pediatirc neruo opthamolgist and are goiggn for 2nd opinion soon. The neuropsych who we adore and who insurance has picked up most of hasn't dxed yet becassue she wanted to make sure there wasn't something else going on. She is either leaning towards NLD or aspergers. DS is brilliant (literally) and we homeschool. He is a self motivated kid with definite interests. Most of his issues are social in nature. He has a few good buddies who we get together with weekly and the moms have been very understanding. Since I am not dealing with an IEP or a school, I have been okay with the slow coming dx.
He recently began OT through Easter Seals and it is going well. He has commented that he likes going because his body is getting wehat it needs. That's a big statement for a little kid. The OT deals more with organizing a play plan and carrying it out in an orderly fashion with a couple of fine and large motor thrown in and lots of self awareness and regualtion. His therapist suggested that he attend a program called Alert this summer. She is suggesting this in place of individual therapy which I can (and now do) do at home. Then we will resume individual OT in the fall. This works well with our schedule as he is to begin speech therapy for receptive issues soon. Has anyone heard of the Alert progam or had any experience with it? Thanks. Heather
