LEAD in bathtub

Someone on the enzyme yahoo list posted their child tested high and lead and their bath tub tested positive for lead. I've tested things around our old 1890's house for lead and the kids lunchboxes. We did have a lunchbox test positive for lead. I never tested our claw foot tub the kids use because I didn't know that was a possible source. So today I went and got a test kit and sure enough our tub tested positive for lead :( Dd is going to the Dr. for a check up tomorrow and I'll have the check her. I've called the nurse to see if we should bring ds with and get him checked too. I know it'd make me feel better. When Kyle had a hair test 3 yrs ago his lead level was in the green but getting close to the upper limit of the reference range. This sucks! That tub is going one way or another. I'm not taking any chances. I don't know how we'll get that thing out though. It weighs tons and is on the second floor.
I reccomend you all check your tubs. Lead can be in plastics, porcelain, and enamals.

I'm glad you brought this up, thanks.
You know, at every well-child check-up, up to a certain age, the doctor would have me answer a lead questionnaire. Each time, we both agreed that it wouldn't be necessary to do a blood test. With my older son (who has AS, but none of us knew that), we were in an apartment that MIGHT have had some lead paint, but David *never* put stuff in his mouth; I was sure of it.
My younger son did put stuff in his mouth, but by then we were in a house that we knew was built in 1968, and again, it was determined that the blood test for lead was unnecessary.
Well...both of my kids drink bath water all the time. Neither of them has even begun to master the fine art of closing their mouths in the tub. I have no idea what the tub is made of, but I'm reasonably sure it's the original 1968 tub.
Sometimes I just get so fed up with all the pollution and poisons that surround us, and whereever there is a law to limit this stuff, there is a loophole. Remember when you could eat fish without worrying about mercury poisoning? Didn't that insane Roman emperor, Caligula, used to drink out of lead cups and bathe in mercury? But I digress...a little.
How do you test for lead, anyway?
Evelyn
You said David never put things in his mouth. Well I just read you can get lead poisioning from skin contact! That's scary.
I got a Lead Check Household Lead Test Kit from Home Depot. I hope your tub is fine.

Oh GEEZ!
We just redid the kids bathroom about a year or 2 ago. The tub is this huge, heavy cast iron thing. We didn't replace it because it was a good one in good condition but it is original to the house (1960). We put in all new tile, new fixtures, the works. If my tub has lead I am going to scream.
We also just redid the master bath last summer. It has a brand new acrylic tub. Maybe they will take thier baths in mine for now.
It never stops does it.
