I just saw your post on the thread I started re: Celexa... it stopped me in my tracks. The link you suggest between ASD and diabetes really intrigues me. My son is 6 and over the least few years my husband and I suspected he could have diabetes, but my pediatrician said absolutely not. Mainly it was my son'd insatiable desire for juice that raised the question in my head. Is there a test that can definitively diagnose diabetes?
Also, I'm curious about what you called calcium toxicity... in that staement you mentioned migraines. About 3 months ago my son was diagnosed with migraines. He's only had them about 3 -5 times over the last 18 months or so, so it isn't frequent, but your post really made me wonder if I should be looking closer at the "inside" of my son. We've really concentrated on the external, behavioral interventions (ABA and RDI), but between his autism diagnosis, severe food allergy, asthma, migraines, suspicion (albeit only on our parts) of diabetes, I'm thinking we need to address biomedical interventions with as much gusto. We tried the GFCF diet and some supplements a few years ago, but then stoppped and never pursued anything else. I do have an appointment with a DAN doctor coming up in the next few weeks, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I should be doing and/or who else should see him. I would really appreciate any advice anyone might care to give.

TIA,
Traci

Hey there,

I am not LR but I wanted to comment. Mike was originally seen for migraines when he was 3. We thought it was a big part of his problem but he didn't have enough language at the time to know if he was having headaches for sure or if it was something else. We also have had him tested for diabetes a number of times since he was small due to a variety of factors. He would drink constantly, wet his bed, wet himself during the day (up to 8 years old) and you had to be very careful that he ate at regular intervals or his mood just went into the toilet and he got very angry and impossible.

He has done tons better on all these things since changing his diet a bit over a year ago. I don't go hogwild, but the kids eat mainly an organic, low sugar diet. I bake with agave nector which has a really low glycemic index and I find choosing choices that are low in glycemic index helps alot. Whole grains rather than white, etc.

I never thought of the headaches again. He has headaches rarely but I don't think they are to the level of Migraine however, he hasn't complained of those recently. I hadn't thought of the calcium toxicity, I thought the help in those areas came from not using additives and food colors.

It is hard to tease out the specifics of what will help but I really do think that diet and our american lifestyle has at least some to do with it. Naturally the diet isn't making my kids non-autistic. It certainly hasn't been a miracle cure taking away those symptoms, but it has made life alot more comfortable and livable for them.
