I posted below about ds sprained ankle. It turns out that it's actually two fractured bones! I took ds to a walk-in clinic tonight for x-rays to see whether there was something more going on besides the sprain the pediatrician diagnosed on Friday, or whether ds was just being hyper-sensitive. I felt sooooo badly when we discovered it was actually fractured bones! The doctor was going to put him on crutches, but ds and I both quickly discouraged that idea (ds 'cus he doesn't want to be the slightest bit independent, and me because I don't want ds to end up toppled over with more broken bones since he has no coordination)! I've been able to wheel him around the house some with our cheap-o computer chair on wheels, and I even used it as a wheel chair to get him to/from the clinic. We have to see an orthopedist in the morning to see whether ds is getting a cast or whether he has to have surgery. I have to say the staff at the walk-in clinic was AWESOME when I told them ds has mild Asperger's. They were so sensitive! The doctor pulled the x-ray tech aside and whispered to her that ds has mild Asperger's so to let me accompany them for the x-ray, and the doctor even called the orthopedist to advise him, so they'd be prepared in the morning. The doc also pulled me out of the room to show me the x-rays so as not to upset ds. I was very impressed with how well they handled everything!

I am pretty sure you can't have the bad mommy award since I already own it. My NT dd is a hypercondriact (sp) big time. Every day she is complaining of some ailment. Last time she complained he side hurt and I let it go a week or so. When I finally took her to the Dr she had broke a rib. I felt horrible! So, get in line for the award.

Oh gals stuff happens. We do our best (though if dad is often watching and kids get sent to the ER I would be a bit concerned;-))

When Emily was 2 she broke her foot climbing a playset with bad shoes on. Took me 2 days to take her in because she was walking on it. I was shocked when they said it was broken. THEN they told me not to let it get wet but she splashed one day in the birdbath. It wasn't much water and I stopped her right away and dried what I saw but didn't call the doc like I was supposed to. It was only a little water after all. When we took her 3 weeks later to get the cast off she had a couple little sores and the doc could tell it had gotten wet.

When Cait was in 3rd grade she took a tumble off Mike's bunk bed with a little help from Mike. Again, made the poor kid sit all day with ice convincing her she was fine. It was broken.

The only reason I took Cait and Mike in the same day when they broke wrist/thumb is because A) I had break experience with Emily and b) I have a SIL who has been an x-ray tech for years so I always call her with the symptoms and she has nailed whether or not something is broken correctly every time.

Common, a few weeks ago I made Mike go back to school the next day after him telling me he had a stomach ache only to have him come home and go into the hospital that day to have his appendix removed.

I know I do the best I can with the info I have. So no bad mommy's.

about the dh comment! DH is also AS, and he almost always over-reacts to every little injury the kids get and starts to rush them to the ER before I can examine the wound and determine whether or not it needs more medical attention, especially on bleeding injuries. About a year ago DH took the kids to Subway for dinner. Same 8yo ds took a tumble, hit his head on the cement curb, and his eye immediately began swelling. DH thought about rushing home but decided he wasn't going to over-react. He went into Subway, ordered sandwiches (all the while the staff is staring in horror at ds face), and came home casually. I took one look at the baseball-sized, growing, purple knot over my ds eye and rushed him to the clinic. The clinic took one look at us and rushed us back ahead of the other patients. Turned out there was no fracture or serious injury, but it looked AWFUL! Poor dh felt so badly, especially because it was a conscious decision on his part to NOT get medical help since he didn't want to overreact!

Thanks for making me feel better, though!

I really did like your "special cream" suggestion and was trying to figure out what I could use that might fool ds (he likes to read what I'm using and gain all kinds of info about application, benefit, whether it stings, etc). Fortunately I wasn't able to come up with any ideas for the cream before I realized ds needed to have his leg re-evaluated.

I'm going to keep the cream idea in my repetoire of things to try, though, 'cus I'm sure I'll have another opportunity to try it!

Thanks for your suggestions and kind words!

Thank you all for making me feel better. I was feeling bad about pushing ds so hard, and I was afraid I'd also made ds fracture worse by trying to force him to walk on it. Fortunately the doctor says we most likely didn't do anything to make it worse. DS is in a full leg cast (it's a 2-part, overlapping cast; they'll take the top cast off in 2-4 weeks, and leave the lower cast for another few weeks). He'll miss school for a month, so the school is trying to formally arrange home schooling, so all the missed days don't affect ds legal standing with the school and promotion at the end of the year. The school is also trying to arrange a home-teacher for a few hours a week who will compare notes with the teacher and make sure we're covering everything his classmates are covering. I'm just glad we finally have a good diagnosis, ds is starting to feel better with the cast on, and I can move on from my guilt now that I hear everyone else's stories! Thanks again for your support!!!

they Dx'd a sprain w/o an Xray!?!?!? not a bad Mommy award, but a BAD Doctor award! I'm so glad the staff and the doctor were so good w/ your son and took such care that he would be comfortable and not anxious over everything. I'd say, GOOD Mommy award for alerting the dr and picking such a good one!

I hope it's a cast and not surgery! YIKES!
