Well, I thought the transition to the new school was going well until I got the following email...
"Josh received a blue slip in social studies from
Mrs. Sheehan for not completing his work. He did not
get this signed by you, so it counts as two. When he
gets 4 blue slips for not doing his work, then he will
not go on our first incentive with the fifth grade.
If he has 8 blue slips for not doing his work than he
will have to serve a detention after school."
I check Josh's backpack every night and ask EVERY night "Did you have homework? Did you get all your work done in class?" I'm not sure whether to be angry with him or with his baseroom teacher.
And how should I approach ensuring that his homework makes it home? (As well as the not-loved "blue slips"). He walks to daycare after school with several other kids - would it be appropriate to ask Mel (6th grade, VERY responsible and mature) to make sure he has his homework/notes home, etc since obviously his teacher cannot? Until something better can be arranged anyway...
Why do I suddenly have a knot in my stomach over this whole "changing schools" issue?

Does he have an IEP? This sounds like a good area for a IEP goal. My ds has an aide that helps him with orgainzation and getting his homework in his backpack. Mel sounds like a good short term solution but he really needs to be taught these skills and thats what IEP goals are for.

He does not (yet) have an IEP. His previous schools were small enough that a formal IEP was not needed - with 15-18 kids, a teacher and a parapro - they KNEW Josh's needs and helped him. New school is 27 kids in his "homeroom" class, plus transitions to 2 other classrooms for various subjects.
So - I pick Josh up from daycare tonight and we head out to gram and grampa's for dinner. Halfway there Josh says "It's Meet the Teacher Night tonight from 6-8 Mom". I asked him why i didn't get a note and received a shrug in response. So - we fly through dinner with my parents and head back to school - to find out that Meet the Teacher night was from 5-6:30 (got there at 6:35). Luckily his teacher was still there, and we were able to turn Josh's desk inside out and find the missing blue slip, homework, notes home, picture day flyer (for FRIDAY)...
Teacher's greeting of "I just got your email - what is OT?" Did not sit well. She went on to say "we have 'x, y, z programs' which teacher should I be talking to?" Teacher then asks "Does he have ADD or something similar?" My response was "I've heard ADD, I've heard Asperger's Syndrome, I've heard a million different 'reasons' for his behavior. I know that he is an intelligent child, but he is emotionally delayed and needs EVERYONE to help him." Which burns me a bit because if she had taken the time to READ his file, she would KNOW this!
Plan of attack is to designate a folder for "Take Home" items. Notes, homework, whatever. It will go wherever he goes, and into his pack at the end of the day whether there is anything in it or not. Daycare will check as soon as he gets home, and send him back for it if it is missing. Luckily daycare is 1/2 block away!
Feeling a little better. I'll feel more better once I get in touch with the principal and hash things out. She pointed the principal out to me, but by the time I talked to the issuer of the blue slip(s) he was nowhere to be found. So we'll call today and set up a meeting time. *grumble*
