Some Good News (I think)

I just got the letter. The diagnostic center has accepted Mike for evaluation. They are going to do a "field study" and come down and do the eval in his school situation here. It will likely be another 2 months before they even call to make the appointment but we have been waiting since May to see if they would even accept him.
Hoping it will give us some really great info on what his needs are, how to help him in general ed and what to do for middle school.

That's great. I hope it doesn't take as long as you are expecting.

Your lucky I like you.....
It is actually through the school districts. The state of California has 3 diagnostic centers through the state department of education. School districts refer thier particularly confusing cases to them for diagnostics, evaluation, consultation, recomendations, etc. They have some of the top professionals in the state for all disciplines. Due to the sheer volume of referrals they get (we are a darn big state to only have 3) it can take up to 6months or more for a case to be completed.
Mike was referred because he is just not a cut and dried kid who is hard to assess and we are having a hard time planning what to do with him beyond elementary. As you know his current placement isn't even what would typically be considered appropriate for a kid like him. However, it is at the neighborhood school which was important for me due to inclusion issues and it has a fabulous team.
We only were referred for the field study rather than at the center. That will actually work better for Mike. You either have a small team (maybe like 1-3) come down to the school and observe, go over case file, interview and assess there. If the child needs a more comprehensive team or is medically involved they go up to the center for 2-5 days of testing there. You live AT the center during the testing. That would have been VERY VERY hard on Mr. Mike so I am glad they chose field study for him. That is what we needed anyway.
