Hit a NT girl during PE

My second grader (son) hit a girl during PE today. He's suspended for tomorrow. He's not getting any autism services currently from the school, but the school is finally evaluating him to see if he's elgible. I will find out on Oct. 6th what they are proposing to do about it.
Does it get better? I know that my DS is not in a good placement. He's in the Emotional Disturbance program. He's socially backwards and immature. His classmates are street smart. He has problems with the other ED students and he has problems when he's mixed in with the NT kids for things like PE, art, science, and music.
I wonder if anyone here has made a placement change with their kid and seen an improvement in behavior. I'm trying to get DS into an autism classroom.

First of all, let me say that don't listen to my gripe I will post later about from today. I will say when a child is in an appropriate placement with the appropriate supports then they do make improvement. My son made fabulous, HUGE gains behaviorally in his current program.
Right now we are having trouble and struggling alot in the behavior arena but I think it is because we added a bunch of mainstream time and it is taking a toll on him. He just got written up today for punching a girl at recess. Hard enough to make her bawl. And 2 school days ago he had a pink slip (one level below todays trouble) for kicking one peer, elbowing another and saying bad things. Should have gone to the office for that too.
Point being, once we make some changes for him his behavior will likely get back into control.

I think you are on the right track. He will not get into a autism program or any more suitable placement until you have him classified as a child with special needs under IDEA. I am even surprised he is in an ED class without that.

Thanks for your post. I can see that the mainstream time is where my son gets in trouble. But, I also know why his ED teacher tries to fit him in mainstream. The ED students set my son off too due to their loud noises and chaotic behavior.
I'm sorry that your son has had some set backs recently. He's not the only one.
