Looking For Thoughts On Curriculum

Our 6 y/o DD is in first grade and as part of their curriculum the take Spanish every other day. (This involves leaving the classroom and going to a specials room with the Spanish teacher.) Claire absolutely hates Spanish, and today the "professional educator" suggested that perhaps it's because she likes music so well. (Music is the class they have on opposite days.) I politely explained to her that NO, it's not just that she likes music, but that she struggles enough with her own language - perhaps expecting her to learn Spanish at the same time is too overwhelming. (DUH!)
Anyway...we agreed to discuss alternatives at the upcoming IEP meeting. If you were in my position, what would you do? I have no problems with her not participating in Spanish. I'm completely convinced that it's not worth it for her. But what would you do with the extra time?
I'd like to have an autism consultant come in and work with her on social skills. But I've also considered seeing if the aide could take her to the computer lab to work on fine motor skills.
Anybody else have other suggestions?
Thanks~
Amy

I would likely have the aide work with her 1:1 to reinforce any areas she is struggling in like you said. It would also be a grand time for social skills. The aide really could utilize that time to reinforce any IEP goals. Social play, fine motor, speech. With training from those specialists there is no reason they couldn't spend the 1/2 hour or so working on those skills.

Anything other that Spanish. My kid's school does the different language each year thing, and I think it is a complete waste of time and energy; although I must say, Peter seemed to pick up a little from Chinese in 1st grade

Last Art was way to overwhelming for Sravan, so the principal pulled him out of the art class and he sat in the office and helped them. You can also suggest that they use this time for her OT, ST so she doesn't miss out on reading or math time during class time.

I agree with the others, pull your child out of Spanish. I cannot imagine Steven learning another language in first grade or any other grade right now. We still struggle with English speaking or writing. OT or tutorial time sounds great.
Good Luck,
