Homeschool was our first choice for our family before I'd even heard of 'ASDs'. Knowing my child as I do now (and knowing he's just like *me*... and I was tortured in PS)... just makes the choice all the sweeter.

If I had a choice I'd love to put Josh back into his original school - which was a public charter sponsored by the Foundation for Behavioral Resources and Grand Valley State University (which has an EXCELLENT psych/special ed program). They're the ones that first suggested AS, but wanted to wait another year to evaluate. We ended up moving before that happened.

It was a very hands on, oral school. Small class sizes, young but "with it" teachers. 8:1 student/staff ratio and they kept the parents VERY involved. Weekly progress reports (schoolwide) and if there was an issue, the teacher found you at pickup time and told you what was wrong instead of waiting for the progress report or PT conference. Uniforms for the kids (navy slacks, white collared shirt) so there was no "he's wearing something neater than me" to distract.

Public School.

Homeschooling was always my first choice. Growing up I was privilege to home, public, and private education at different times. Homeschooling was always the most fun, but in college I realized that I'd also gotten the most out of my homeschooling years academically.

My husband convinced me to put our now 12yo HFA DD in public at first so we could get the extra help... that turned into a trainwreck for her. With our younger children he hasn't even thought about it. I'm sure they'd do fine in PS, and I'm glad that it's an option for them should we ever need it, but we love what we're doing now.

Isn't it great to see our tax dollars really getting used. i am not sure but i am sure we are right there up with you in taxes.
I don't know if you had seen my post Paula, but I changed Josh's dx to Autistic with his teachers blessings.lol.
But we will now be going to get an Autisitc consultant to help us. We will be setting up a BIP and we added Speech to our plate. And all are courtesy of the Longwood school district.I wish we didn't need to do this. but the inclusion class and all.

But listening to how some people are having such issues over things the more I realize how lucky I have been in where we live. It really would be scary for us to move off the Island considering hoe much we are getting in services for Josh and realizing how hard it would be to pay for this out of pocket.
