Ok, I was looking for video's of kids with AS who looked like mine. I ended up finding this on Youtube.
As an aside, DH has to go there this week to do an analysis on a kid from his district. Needless to say he is not a happy camper about going there. This place makes me sick.
If you can't make it through the whole thing go to the very last bit. A half minute or so. I think I am going to puke. They show a student "say something and flap" then the therapist checks a behavior chart and you can see that she is going to give the child a shock. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

OMG why in hades would any parent allow their child to let people do these things. You know about the rages I am going thru, I would never, ever accept this. Ever.
Disgusting is right. Your poor hubby.
And another thing..... they consider a child being seriously disruptive verbally when they say, your fat, you stink and they use bad non verbal expressions?????
Heck I could give you a dime for evertime Chris told me I was fat and you would be rich. He doesn't do it to be disruptive, he does it cuz its true and he's extremely honest and literal! (lol I can't believe I told all of you that I'm fat heeeeeeeeeeeeee)
I really didn't think places and "treatments"

LOL Lainie, you are too funny!
I was watching that video, and when the "You're fat" and "You stink" references as "unacceptable behaviours" came up... I was thinking It's probably true!

After reading everyone's posts, I'm not going to watch the video.
Sadly Paula, I have known for years that this place existed. A million years ago when I was working and moved back to MA I was looking for a job. The add in the paper only said it was a school for kids with autism so I went for a first interview. They don't even let you past the front rooms on the first one and show you some old 20/20 video and hand out alot of propoganda, then they call you back for a second interview. Needless to say I didn't go.
I didn't realize until I saw this video that they had kids with AS there too. Not that it is any more ok to use this on kids who have anything else or how severe they are, it was just that it hit home a bit harder.
Plus this has been a bit of a subject around here lately as DH just left for there a few minutes ago. He found out nearly a month ago he had to go there and it has been quite stressful. It is a touchy situation I can't post much about due to confidentiality and this being public and all. He is going with a team though.
Hey, at least he is hitting a couple Red Sox games while he is there.

I also knew this school existed. I have heard about it from other parents, read about the shocks elsewhere as well. But I just couldn't watch that last bit of footage. I had to turn it off and go cry. And that girl was happy, the flapping was doing noone any harm, unless of course she was calling that "therapist" fat or stupid, of course.
And of course there is RESEARCH about how they are in the rest of their lives after this treatment, how this shock therapy therefore lowers the stresses on their nervous systems so they don't have to resort to socially inappropriate flapping?!?!?! I realize the behavior they are talking about has to do with attacking or self-injuring, at least I HOPE that is the main reason this children are being placed here, not just screaming and flapping and using inappropriate, uncomfortable language...
As if our children don't have a hard enough time in life.
Sara
There is research on how the behavior increases again and sometimes more dramatically once this "treatment" is stopped.
There must be SOMETHING wrong with a place that names itself after a judge who rules to keep them open. The amount they spend yearly in lawyer fees and propoganda must be enormous.

I'm really surprised that this place is still in operation.. this Dr. Isreal must have some friends in really high places.
I like to watch investigative news programs, like Dateline, 60 Minutes, Nightline, you name it. I swear I've seen several shows about this place over the years, like the one they show in the video, basically questioning the practice of using electric shock on the students. There was even a Law and Order "ripped from the headlines" type show on it years ago. Also, I thought there were a at least 1 death there, maybe not solely as a result of the shock therapy.
I was just googling a little on this, because I kinda remember this.. there was a report issued by a group in NYS last year, because a high percentage of kids in the school are from New York State, with their tution fully funded by the NY State Dept of Ed. Some of the news articles I found report that 1/2 to 2/3 of the kids are from NYS. I thought the NY legislature was trying to outlaw some of the practices this school uses, something like that. Not sure what happened to that NY Senate bill,or if NY DOE still refers students there. There are kids there from other states.
I have to mention I only watched half the video this am.. I heard Ryan coming upstairs and quickly shut it down. But the half I saw was bad enough. Also, I could feel my blood pressure rising..
I think this center must prey on truly desparate parents, who think they have no other options.
