Worried about Cian-getting worse

I am getting so worried about Cian (4 in June). Heis temper tantrums are expanding exponentially and his OT eval just came back where his fine motor is at a 20 month old level and visual motor is at 37 months (he's 46 months now). The lining up is continuing, but dang it he's so flippin' social, although lately he's been quite aloof with others. It's almost like all the ASD symptoms and behaviors have increased and exploded. I htink he needs additional testing, but the EI people already tested him in August and Noveber and just came up with significan developmental delays. His OT just assumes he's aspie (as do dh and I). Do you think it's time to get a private eval done? It'll caosy $1700, but there's an excellent place near us that does this type of testing. I just don't want him screwed out of services by the school system 'cos he's not spectrum enough, kwim?
btw his meltdowns are becoming awful to deal with. They go on for ages and I am eggshell walking more and more these days with him. He does have icky ear wax going on and a runny nose that one course of antibiotics hasn't kicked. I have an appt set up with the ENT but they won't see him until May 24th, (bleededn' hmo's222#@$@#$$$#$%).
What should I do????
Dee

I'd bite the bullet and get the private eval. If the symptoms are getting worse you should have to go on without appropriate services. And you would have something concrete to take to the EI people if you request another eval and the school district and whoever. Of course they don't have to agree with what a private doc says...in which case you might want to consider going through the grievance process. It is so important to get things set up as early as possible. It would be great if you could get a diagnosis before you start transition to kindergarten.
You could also talk with Cian's primary doc. Sometimes if the doc refers, the insurance will pay part for psych evals. Worth checking into.
Good luck

I would get the eval. I know the cost but it's worth it. Putting a price on getting an answer just in case is justifiable.
You always knew he was "at risk" and if it's rearing it's ugly head, it's worth getting it nipped in the but.
I'll pray it's not what it could be

Doesn't it just stink to high heaven when things are going along relatively okay and then BAM! for some completely unknown reason they're freakin' out of control?!?!?! We did this with Claire at the exact same age...and now we're doing it again.
We finally broke down and paid for the outside eval. Granted, we almost had to because of lack-of-services in this area...but in the long wrong, it was the right decision to make.
Hang in there...and keep us posted.

Yup, in hindsight this has been building but it has appeared awfully fast too, kwim? I'm looking at Emory Uni, a local private place as well as the Marcus Institute. Whomever gets him in the soonest gets the check, lol!

you said he came back with developmental delays right? Is he on an IEP? If so I would call a meeting and ask to address these new concerns. You don't need a new full re-eval. he should already qualify under the previous and you can change the IEP at any time. It is a work in progress. You see new needs, bring them up and maybe then can put him in the special ed preschool program and start working on some of it a bit more.
In addition, you mention antibiotics and a infection. It is quite possible these 2 things are sending him into more behaviors. Make sure he is getting probiotics and yogurt to combat any yeast issues and kick out that infection.

Dee,
I agree that it is probably wise to chase down an private eval if you can swing it. Check out local universities and see if they have a program whereby he can be evaluated by a grad student (under supervision of a professor) we did this with Peter once and it was a lot cheaper than the standard eval, with less waiting time, too.
I also agree with Renee (what's new?) about the IEP, school district, probiotics etc.

You know, Paula, I was thinking the same thing!
Adam has LOST his mind somedays. We had to switch his allergy meds (damn insurance company won't pay for Zertek anymore but it gave him an upper respetory (SP?) infection as a rare side effect) to claratin. Got pulmacort too if need for his asthma if it's THAT bad.
In retrospect, I blame the weather and our kiddies not being able to adapt/change or be able to tell us how they feel.
Oh gosh, I hope it could be a enviormental issue.
Still get the eval, it'll give you the answer but try the probotic/allergy stuff too.

Yes I was bad this time and didn't push the probiotics, but I think I'll start him today. I also have an antihistamine from the ped and his OT recomended it too. Thanks guys. I'll give it a week, and if I'm still not happy I'll get a hold of an evaluator.
