Rash ?

Does anyone else's child have a on and off again rash on their bottom cheek area? For a few years now my son will get these teeny tiny little pimples on his butt and once he gets one or two they spread more. It is not dependent on season or soaps, etc. So, I'm wondering if it's an underlying metabolic thing that I'm missing or can't remember. Yeast? He's in the middle of a huge communication spurt right now, hasn't had any diet changes either. Eats lots of yogurt. All input appreciated.
Thanks, Valerie

Val,
I remember years ago, a very wise Pediatrician telling me that rash that looked like tiny pimples was fungal, whereas the

Lotrimin cream is available in the drugstore.
You apply it topically. If the rash is fungal, the cream will start to work quickly: in like 24 hours or so. I don't believe Lotrimin it will have any adverse effect if the rash is NOT fungal.

Hi Valerie! Lily has a rash like that too. Always. Over the years, she has been prescribed treatments for yeast, but they never seem to help. I always had a feeling that it had something to do with her urine or her poop. Once she was potty-trained during the day, the rash got somewhat better. She still wears a diaper at night. She no longer has dirty diapers, so I know it's not from bm's. When she had her tonsils/adnoids out a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the rash went away completely. During that time, she was waking up in the morning with diapers that were totally dry, due to the fact that she wasn't able to get as many fluids down. We were excited that her bottom was finally pimple free! Unfortunately, now that her fluid-intake is normal again and her diaper is soaking wet in the morning, the rash is coming back. So, now we know that her urine has got to be the cause. I'm not sure how to approach her new pediatrician about it, though. I know how frustrated you feel about this. No matter what kind of creams we try: desitin, lotrimin, boudreaux's butt paste (gotta love that name, huh?), etc. nothing works. Her urine must either contain something she's allergic to, or it's highly acidic. She's already on a milk-free, egg-free diet due to food allergies, so maybe it's another food she's allergic to. I hope that you can figure out the trigger for your child soon. It can't be comfortable for our kids to always have a rash. I don't know about you, but it makes me feel like a bad mother who isn't taking better care of her child's bottom. I know it's not true, but I still feel that way. I wish I had some great advice for you, but at least you know you're not alone. I'm going to call her ped next week and see if he has any ideas. Maybe he can have her urine tested or something. I'll let you know how it goes.

You know, this is interesting to me because Claire has a pimple rash, but it's on the back of BOTH of her knees! It's not like anything I've ever seen in the diaper area, and she's been completely trained for well over 8 months.
Hmmm...maybe I need to try some Lotrimin.

My DD gets a rash like that on her bum and we tried desitin and all the diaper rash lotions, we tried stuff for fungal and it didn't work. Now we usually get a small tube of cortisone from the doc and it clears right up. The doc said that since she is very fair and comes from a family of sensitive skin people that it is probably from wet diapers and regular lotions just don't do the job.
Some people don't like to use steroids on little ones but it makes her feel so much better because I know that rash hurts her bum. And we aren't using it all the time, just when it gets so bad that nothing else will work.
Just my 2 cents.

Amy, keep an eye on that rash in the back of her knees. My dd grew up with severe Eczema, and it often will appear in the back of the knees, the inside of elbows ect. She also had it under her forarms and up the backside of her legs too.
Its extremely itchy and the more you itch the worse it gets. Its very uncomfortable. We used Elecon (sp?), something with a small amount of steriods in it. It was the best thing we ever did for her. You can get it from your pediatrician.

Thanks for the tip, Lainie. So far, she's never scratched it, and she'll barely let me me look at it, so I haven't wanted to fight for a trip to the ped's office. But I never even considered it could be Eczema. Her cousin (Marc's neice) has severe Eczema and the two "rashes" look nothing alike.
TMI alert...avert eyes if you have a week stomach!!!
Claire's doesn't get red or anything...it's just a whole bunch of tiny little pimples which, when "picked" produce hard white cores. (Okay, I'm a bad mom...but one night when she was sleeping, I had to investigate.)
I'll call the ped's office this week.
