Geez Mom, let the kid have a diet pepsi

This week was autism camp for Mike and though he was good there and says he enjoyed it, it wasn't as good as last year. I know this because each day he came home quite challenging until he worked his willies out or crankies.

Today we have the bright idea to go out to dinner after the closing thingie they did. Mike orders a diet pepsi to drink, (WTF!) The kid never drinks diet. He maybe has had it once in his life when there were no other options. I didn't think he would like it, I don't know what got it into his head he had to have this.

So mom (me)in all her infinite wisdom tries to veto Mike's soda choice. Telling him, you won't like it. You shouldn't have it. Well the kid starts completely losing it in the middle of the restaurant. Huge tears, screaming, the works. Oh and we are RIGHT next too a big business meeting.

Well the waitress doesn't even flinch and neither does the meeting and he is throwing a doosy. Autism awareness stuff must be working or something.

So after a couple minutes DH and I in our again infinite wisdom think, perhaps for some weird reason he HAS to have this diet soda tonight for some weird reason and we tell him he can and change his order. Of course he won't communicate why. Not effectively anyway. But he did calm down then did his overly good thing. He is total jekyl and hyde when he is like that. He wants to be good so much but is so emotional and tense that he goes back and forth.

I think next year we are going to do the surf camp or none at all.

Wow Renee, things like this make my jaw drop. I can never understand when Chris decides to change things like that. Then when he changes he obsesses"s and has to have the same thing over and over again.

You know it's weird, Marisa used to do the same thing, only drink Diet after someone gave her a diet drink. And she would only drink diet for a long time. Eventually she switched back, but you know it reminds me of Chris, who has to have the same thing over and over again, but after 3 months is tired of it and then picks another food.

I personally can't stand Diet. But I bet you anything if my sister who drinks diet gave it to my kids and they liked it, it would be their new obsession....

And you know how obsessions go....

Glad to see you guys figured out how to fix this. I know, in a restaurant, it's really really hard!
