Mike took the wine at church today. First time since he "had" to at his first communion. Only 4 years.
He has always been rigid that he isn't 21 so he couldn't do it. I have been trying for years to explain that in this case it is ok. It is one sip and it is blessed. Still no go.
Today he is behind me in line. I just do a quick turn around as I am leaving to do that "make sure everything is ok" look and I saw it. I nearly fell over with a double take. He always goes up, bows and walks away. But not today. DH and I caught each others eye ( he was behind Mike) and had this look like "WHO IS THIS KID!"
Ok, sounds like a silly reason to celebrate but I was nearly in tears after. The whole communion experience for him has been so traumatic over the years that it was just the culmination adn beautiful.
Not that every time was traumatic for him. His first communion was and then for months after we had to go over each time how to recieve, etc. because he just couldn't remember all the steps but so wanted to do it right. Then this was kind of the end of that. It was like the feeling when they graduate or make a major milestone after waiting a really long time.
well it is probably kind of silly, but I was dang happy about it.

Renee,
Oh I'm so proud of Mike. I've seen it in Victor as well. Your heart breaks when they have such a traumatic experience and when they finally overcome it, you want to scream it from the mountain tops. Especially after the week he had at camp, to do something that grown up was a major marker for him. So YEA MIKE!!!!!

Wow! Why don't they warn us when they're going to do stuff like that! LOL That's so cool. Did he plan that or did it just happen spontaneously?
Chrystee
thanks guys! I knew folks here would understand.
I don't think he planned it chrystee. I can't even get out of him why or what was different. He just did it, lol.
Renee
hehehe.
You were just talking about Mikes' "21" thing the other night in chat. I'm surprised you didn't fall over right there in Mass.
OK so now what's to prevent him experimenting in his teens?

Don't go there. I may have to hurt you now.
Chiming in late on this one, sorry...today was my and the kids first day of school!
This is incredible Renee. I would've dropped on the floor right then and there. We had an incident with Claire at mass Sat. night. She went into a full out meltdown when she didn't get "The Body" (she desperately wants to take Communion). So Marc had to take her out of the church and she screamed the whole way out.
After mass Marc takes her to talk to the priest who is not only familiar with our situation but is aware enough to know that spectrum kids sometimes have texture/sensory issues. So he decided to give her a non-consecrated host to see if she'd tolerate it. Sure enough, she pops it in her mouth and munches away on it and then skips back to the van. Oiy!!! The priest has agreed to let her come back after mass every week. How cool is that??? AND we're going to make arrangements to prepare her a solo First Holy Communion.
Yeppers, Renee...cool things really do happen, don't they?
Amy
WOW!!!!!!
I like you priest! I am thinking it must be the cousin of one we had years ago. I used to bring a young man from the residential school to church with me. He was severely delayed and completely nonverbal but dad told me he had made his first communion. I asked my priest and was given an incredible education on the whole thing. He worked it out so that it would work out well for us to take this boy to church which i did about 1 time a month (when he wasn't on a home trip).
