Hi! I am new on here. I am married and have 3 children. My son is alomost 12 and my 2 daughters are ages 5 and 4. My 5 year old was diagnosed a year ago with Asperger's and epilepsy. Any other moms (and/or dads!) here with a child with both? Just curious to see how common it was!

Welcome! Yes there are a few here that have both dx-s. Stay and put your feet up. There's a great bunch of women here :)

Actually yes. Not only do I have a child with AS and epilepsy but she is a girl. ACK! There aren't that many with that trifecta I don't think. Maybe a couple.

I have heard that in a variety of places that about 1/3 of children with ASD or autism have epilepsy. I have met a number IRL but not as often online. I don't think it is as common with aspergers and epilepsy. And it is pretty uncommon to have a girl dx'ed with aspergers. My dd is Cait and she is 13.

My dd has a pretty mild seizure disorder. She started with simple partial sensory seizures. We never would have even known she had them if it wasn't for her neuro and EEG. She was trying to rule out something like landau-kleffner for her language issues (cait did have sig. delay when younger). After a few years on seizure meds we took her off thinking we were in the clear and about 9mo later she had her only tonic/clonic seizure. After that she had a significant complex partial and we increased her meds and since then she has been basically seizure free for a year. Occasionally she goes through phases where I believe she is having increased seizure activity in her sleep (she is currently starting another of these. She always had most in her sleep). she is on trileptal which has worked well but we just did another increase hoping to stop some of this break through stuff.

I also hang out on the seizure disorder board as well. Those moms are really knowledgable on the seizure stuff. I think there is one other mom with a recent HFA/ASD type dx for her son as well who stops by but we are the only ASD parents there.

Thank you all so much for your responses! It seems like everyone here is nice and it's going to be great to have people to talk to when the days are "bad ones". Like yesterday, we went to a friend's B-day party and I guess it was just too much for Chesney. She had a massive meltdown and it lasted quite a while. And then after we got home another ensued and I had a hard time getting her to bed. Which of course ment I had a hard time getting her up for school this morning. (she started Kindergarten today!) Add all this to the fact that I am trying to quit smoking and it's already been a crappy morning and it's only 9 am!!!!!Thanks again!!

Ahhh Carrie, know that when you come and share your bad day, most likely we have btdt and still going thru it lol. And this board is great when we need that extra encouragement, extra hug, extra nodding up and down with someone saying I understand.

The other day Lainie and I were in the chat room as a last minute chat. I was getting very frustrated as usual with the fact I keep bouncing which is one reason I tend to not go to chat. Very hard to follow conversations when you getbounced and loose the flow.

But one of the things we were talking about, and I don't know if this might get pulled, was maybe taking this on to an instant messanger route. Like Yahoo. Most of our systems interact with the program well. And no bouncing. It has some good points because then we can chat any time with out posting it here. Not saying we don't want to include everyone but buddy lists can be a good indicator of who is on at the time. And most of the systems do allow for a room for a group. But it helps when you are having a crappy day to see someone from this group on your buddy page and then page them to chat. Instant chat, instant buddy, instant relief from what ails you.

It is not meant to replace this venue, esp with so many newbies and so much info to share. And posting here is a great way to do that. But for the times where you do want to chat, and I know that yahoo allows for voice if ou have a mic. Again if may be a great way enhance what we have here.

Let me know what you all think
