If there were a "proud" face, I would be wearing it right now. Of course it is only the first week, but Nick has exceeded my expectations and has been such a trooper with all of the changes we have put him through. I posted about the Orientation which went very well and I was so happy for that.
Wednesday, Kindy Day 1: I walked him to school with 2 of his friends who are also in his class and they all walked right into school. I could see Nick was tense, but having his friends there really helped. We had to stop in the office so I could give the nurse his clonidine so we missed first bell and I had to walk him to class. He grabbed my leg, but his teacher gently told him it was time to say good bye which he did and went and sat with his class. I proceed to leave the classroom and bawled in the hallway! hehe...Picked him up right after school and he said he had a great day and wanted to go back every day. His teacher said he tested her a couple of times, as most do, but his day went really good. He was fidgety, but all around really well.
Today: Took him to school again, he wasnt ready to ride the bus from the Y (before school care) to school. Met up with his friends again, they were a little scared to walk in the school themselves, but they did it! After school, I had him go to the after school program until 4:00. It is supposed to be right at the school, but due to technical problems, they bussed them back to the Y which was probably good as Nick rode the bus for the first time. He liked it. I explained to the teacher about his AS (I had already written an intro letter to them) and had someone explain the change in schedule to him so he wouldnt freak out about the change in plans. Picked him up at the Y at snack time so we sat on the floor in the gym eating goldfish and raisins hanging with the other kids. As is with Nick, he had gravitated towards towards the older kids, but he had a good time.
So far, no complaints from his teacher. He likes kindy. We are not on an IEP yet, after talking to the school psychologist, she said that he may not need one right away. I agreed to wait and see how he does. He wants to learn so badly and it seems that this new structured day is working good for him. His ADHD may rear its head and cause problems for him, but we havent started him back on the Metadate yet, so that is an option too. So far his anxiety hasnt caused him problems either. I just feel so proud that he took this in stride, amazing how some changes affect him but this hasnt been as bad. I guess he was more ready than I was...

Christine,
Dave actually has done marvelously with school routines and such. He thrives on it. He definitely is ADHD and if I pushed it I know at this point I could get an AS dx. He is having all kinds of trouble at soccer, did in preschool, at home....well....UGH. But man, school just really works for him. he is on a IEP but about to graduate again but only for speech articulation. Otherwise he really does quite well and has since Kindie. I really thought he would fall apart at some point but he thrives. I hope it is the same for Nick.
