Well, the first week of school is over, and wanted to let you all know how it went!
The principle really seems to be keeping her word! She has made Wesley her "personal assistant", and has odd jobs for him to do. She also made him "Head Safety" and he feels so proud of himself over this one. A safety helps the kids get to their buses orderly and behave on the individual buses. It is a big job. He was a safety for a little while last year, but there was this one kid that would not stop bugging him, and not knowing how to handle it Wes threatened to stab him, twice! The second time the bus driver took away his safety job! Yikes
I called the head of spec ed of our district to see what they were going to do about a social skills class. They didn't have anything like this before, and Wes' doc specifically recommended it. I got a call back from the social worker, and this is what she proposed, I hope I explain right,
They are going to get a small group of kids, from different 4th grade classrooms, and make Wes' part of this group with a leadership role. They will go into the CI classroom and do projects with those kids, have special lunches, etc... Wes will have no idea that this is actually centered around him, he will think that it is a special group to help the CI kids. The social worker will of course guide the group. Her hope is that at first she will be carefully setting up social situations for Wes, and eventually friendships will come from this, and he will begin appropriate social interactions on his own.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS? I am bit worried that it won't work at all, but hopefull.
Other than a couple of small anxiety attacks, Wes is really excited about school so far. He even invited a girl from his class, that he just met this year, to his birthday party!!! She came but got a bit upset because Wes didn't play with her as much as she thought he should. I had to remind him several times that she was there and he should play with her! LOL! Oh well, one step at a time!
I am so proud of him!
