Well we had a doctor's appt today. He to me that he has some Asperger like thing but he said it is more ADHD than anything. It makes me mad because he said that he can't put on paper at this time that he has Asperger Syndrome because he is still to young. He give me meds to control it. My DH won't listen to me so we can talk about it. The doctor said that a Autism Dog will be a good thing for him and that he need OT and Speech Therapy. He also needs to have a one-on-one aid in school or at smaller class room setting. I just don't know what to do anymore. Need help. any thoughts.

Thanks,
Mindy

Well, some docs won't say Asperger's til a child is older and has had a chance to "develop" some of the more typical Asperger tendencies.

I don't really have much help for you, other than to send you a cyber hug and say I understand how frustrating it must be. On one hand, you need a proper diagnosis to 'unlock' the help and support your kid needs, and to help you to understand how to help him. On the other hand, the 'wrong' diagnosis can be just as useless as *no* diagnosis - in fact, can do more harm than good, because it will set you off down the wrong road in getting targetted, effective help and support for *your* child, rather than some mythical 'textbook' child. So I do sort of understand the doctor's reluctance to (mis)diagnose early - with DS, we didn't get a full diagnosis til he was 8. And to be fair, it wasn't until then - or, ok, maybe a couple of years earlier, but certainly not when the 'problems' started presenting themselves when he was 3 - that we had a sufficient 'mix' of things to be able to make sense of it all.

And I am sorry you are struggling with your DH accepting it too. Both DH and I struggled for years with it - veering between 'he's just a kid who's a bit strange, everyone should stop fussing' to 'I really think something is wrong but I don't know what' to 'I wish I knew *what* it was so we could help him' - the diagnosis, when it came, was a complete relief and everything slotted in to place.

Sheesh! You have the components of autism, but you don't have autsim?! Why does ds need OT, speech therapy, a 1-1 aide, smaller classroom setting, and an autism dog if all he's got is ADHD?! Like the pp poster said, sometimes a bad diagnosis is worse than no diagnosis. Can you get a 2nd opinion? What has the doc officially put on paper for your ds diagnosis?

I know what you mean. He said that he has Asperger's Syndrome but he can't because he is to young. I was took that we need to get the "ADHD" under control. So I just don't what to do. I was crying all night last night. I have church members and you ladies for support and I'm very thank you for everything. I don't know if you I can get a second option. I just don't what to do anymore.
