I have to agree this is a strength I would encourage. My son began reading before age 3 and I remember when he started in his prek-3 class one of the things they had to do every morning was practice tracing letters in their journals. My son would hand out all the journals to his classmates because he could read all their names on the covers. I thought it was hysterical to watch the shocked look on the other parents faces. I think hyperlexia can exist on it's own without a dx of AS but it is often associated with the disorder.

Hello, Theresa,

I would separate hyperlexia, which is a strenth in my opinion, with obsession, which can be a problem.

(And for that matter, your son may be reading with good comprehension. Which is all strength! Hyperlexia usually is a talent for decoding that is WAY ahead of talent for understanding the text.)

I would use your judgement about "controlling" the obsession. If it is in the way of his life, control it. But an obsession for letters and a talent for decoding and/or reading with understanding do not have to be lumped together.

My cents,

Sidney
