This was an interesting article...I would be interested to see if there really is a connection...I know personally I had the gel to induce labor, pitocin, narcotics for pain & an epidural.

The article itself is dreadfully out of date in terms of statistics. One in 500...I don't think so!!

I had an epidural and pitocin with Liam (7-ASD) and Roan (14 months-NT so far): both were induced around 2 weeks early. Cian (4) my aspie was late and came so fast I barely had a saline drip inserted and out he popped, no epi, no pit. With our family I really think we have a genetic predisposition and certain environmental factors can trigger ASD symptoms. Perhaps it was the pit, perhaps it was vaccines, perhaps it was the tuna I craved with Liam's pregnancy.

Who the hell knows; what I do know is I have three great kids and they are who they are.

Sorry, I'm not angry at you at all btw: just mad at the fringe "Autism is caused by this now" element. I am beginning to undderstand the aspies for freedom campaign.

Yep I had to take the whole shabang over here. Epidural, pitocin and I have Strep B so had a IV hook up with anitbiotics so I could deliver vaginally......hooray I suck as a mom

I also heat baby bottles in the microwave and the toxin from that is in him too.

I give up anymore............I get calls from school, all bad and NO praise so I might as well get his rubber room ready for him at the state hospital................I f*cking hate my life right now.

Thanks for the insight and news

I don't think the reaction to the article is anger at you, I think it is frustration at the seemingly unending desire to blame our children's autism on something, and what easier target than the mother?

Look back - it was poor parenting, attachment issues, day care, no day care, pregnancy nutrition, vaccinations, lack of vaccinations, conception under a full moon after 10:37pm on a Tuesday with a Scorpio as a partner...

As moms, we tend to blame ourselves for everything that goes wrong in our children's lives (but don't accept the credit when it is going right - what's up with that?) so when there is yet another unfounded theory or a study based on a small or limited sample (or worse, a study based on other studies) that throws out yet another thing in the past that we can't change, moms tend to get their dander up.

For example, I have 2 kids, one is significantly and multiply disabled, the other is facing a number of challenges of his own.

All four of my kids were over 40weeks gestation. Three of the four were induced with Pitocin, but the only two who have autism are the two who take after dh in every way (dh has AS). The two kids who take after my side of the family don't have AS, incl ds who had gel, pitocin & forceps delivery.

I agree with the others who say there's just no way of knowing WHY our kids have autism. There are so many guesses as to what causes this, but no one really knows -- and every kid may have a different reason why. I guess in some ways it's nice to have the genetic factor 'cus I blame it all on that and don't stress over whether pitocin or microwaves or some other fluke factor caused it.

After years of working in Quality Assurance the one thing I know is that you can make the data say anything you want it to. I just finished reading the book "Skinner's Box". One researcher tried to prove her theory by saying 25% of the participants acted in a particular way so that proves her theory. What does it prove? 75% did not! With all the studies being thrown at us it's no wonder we're all on the defensive. I have 2 kids. NT daughter and Aspie son. Both were induced with Pitocin. Both had all their shots on the same schedule. Both were raised by the same set of parents. My feeling is that the numbers are increasing because we are getting better at diagnosis and parents are more educated and informed.

Hi Ginny!

Here's my thoughts on this article. I have read so many articles on what causes autism, everything from vaccines, heavy metals, refrigerator mothers, environmental toxins, the age of fathers, you name it.
