I don't know if you can relate to this but when my son was an infant he would "wake" in the night with blood curdling screams. He didn't want to be changed. He didn't want to be fed. It was as if he was screaming in his sleep. We used to turn all the lights on and strip him naked. He would suddenly wake up and be happy as a clam, as if nothing had happened. Once he did this during the middle of the day and we took him to the emergency room. We could not console that child. After waiting about 3 hours (and many disapproving glares in the waiting room) we were finally seen by a doctor and by that time he had stopped screaming and was quite chipper. The doc said maybe he had gas. Yeah, right. I don't know if it was an underdeveloped nervous system or what, but his mood turned on a dime. He is nine now and has outgrown all that but I do remember how frustrating it was trying to figure out what was wrong. If it helps at all I think it was worse on me than it was on him. I was worrying and feeling guilty that I was a horrible mother and he has no memory of it at all. It really is like the flip of a switch.

first 8 yrs of son's life were like this. at 8 he was dxed asd and about a yr later came bipolar.

we've tried different meds and now he seems mostly balanced. today he was not balanced. the screaming, anger, tears, then apology, happy and back to screaming. things go better when he has enough sleep and is feeling healthy. right now he's excited about a new project and has several adult teeth coming in all at once.

Peter could be like this when he was younger. He got a lot better as he got older and could communicate his thoughts and fears.

He can be moody still but we don't think it is 'mood disorder" moody. We think it is just part of who he is. There is no history of bipolar or anything like that in our family, either. Stuff like that usually runs in families.
