FINALLY got the paperwork in for waiver

I FINALLY got all the paperwork into Dept of Children and Family today to get Liam the Katie Beckett Waiver (which hopefully will lead to the Natural Supports waiver that gives funds for respite, therapy, camp etc).

Only took me 6 friggin' months. OK, it may have taken less if I had pulled the finger out earlier. As it was I had to go in person to SS get a denial letter for medicaid, take that to DFACS, get the Katie Beckett waiver packet. Figure out which of Liam's three docs needed to fill out some ridiculous form that only seems to apply to physically disabled kids, (I got three different answers depending on who I spoke to, including Liam's case worker and a social worker). Then I had to bring all that plus his birth cert back to DFACS and now it's a 30-45 day turnaround. I'm pretty sure they'll invent other hoops for me to dive through (ie: Liam's evaliuation is over 12 months old, and they'll want an updated one). But at least it's off my kitchen table and in DFACS's hands.

Fingers and toes crossed all.

Oy.

Well, first off congratulations!! It sounds like something to celebrate.

Now as to the process... again, oy. It's like they intentionally make things difficult so that you can't get what you need. Sure the system can do great things, but it seems that too often it falls short. I am just now catching a glimpse of what is in store. Yay for you for sticking to your guns! I admire your follow-through.

Sorry, I am very anti-people today. 'Cept for the fine people around here of course. :)

you are NOT helping me get my butt in gear to do the medicaide waiver-- I've been procrastinating but really need to do it, I just hate dealing w/ people and bureaucracy. It certainly would help w/ the bills though.

Call your dept of family and children's services and ask if they have a Katie Beckett waiver program. I stumbled across it via a spec needs information meeting through a church. And it was Liam's teacher from last year that told me about that.

I believe Katie Beckett is federal (ie: all states offer it),it gives medicaid for those that otherwise would be denied it. we need it to then be able to apply for the Natural Supports Waiver which may give us $$$ for other programs(respite, therapy etc). Now I'm not sure the Natural Supports waiver is a federal program.

As it is I'm still not totally positive well get it to begin with.

But let me ask... medicaid is for insurance purposes right?

That's the beauty of the Katie Beckett waiver; it covers children with various disabilities who otherwise would be denied medicaid due to having private insurance via their parents. Basically, the child isn't punished for the parents capability to get private insurance. They act like the child with the disability isn't responsible for the parents financial net.

Like I said though, we are doing this just to get access to other funds and you can't get them unless you HAVE the KB waiver. Still, it would be nice to have medicaid cover the large co-pays we have for Liam's meds, ($75-$100 a month).
