Toddler harness?
| Sat, 04-05-2008 - 9:49pm |
So I'm travelling to Ireland next weekend, and I have Cian and Roan in tow....yes with just lil ole me....and yes I need my head examined!!!
Anyhoo, today in the mall I realised why we don't go to the mall, and especially not on a rainy Saturday....duh. Liam actually wasn't bad, it was Cian...ugh. I swear he was a ninja in a former life...the boy is stealth on wheels. Now add that to crowded mass, and me being distracted by smaller child...yes I was in pieces by the end of the outing. So I am considering buying one of those toddler harnesses for the airport; the backpacks that look like a stuffed a animal. I may even get one for Roan, although she's only 16 months nd they recommend 18 months plus.
Anyone else use them?

I used them for my boys because they were like Cian.
Dear Dee,
I do use them in airports, but I think the last two times I only left the harness on my son when he was 2-3, but did not actually need to leash him. I found it comforting to know that I could just attach the handle if I needed to. For example, I was afraid that there may be a noise that would make my son decide he needed to bolt, or he just may want to run, weaving through pedestrian traffic in the airport, while my floppier slower son would be sitting down for a break. Even when I didn't use the leash part, it was nice to have some sturdy grab handles on him.
My son also would be able to understand that I would need to put on the lead if he "forgot" the rules about running, but I don't think I even had to go there the last couple of trips.
On the flights, the
We had one for Tom because he would just take off and there was no way I could have caught him.

I don't generally use them but they are a lifesaver in places like busy malls and airports - and they are good for the 'don't run off or I'll have to use the harness' threat. People can stare all they like, I sure as hell wasn't having my turbo-charged missile boy bolting off into traffic (I have rheumatoid arthritis and simply cannot keep up with
Dee,
I say go for it. Especially as you are going to Dublin and the airport there is a frickin zoo. (to say nothing of O'Connell St)

Thanks all,
I couldn't be bothered with the nasty stares; I am too long into the road with spec needs kids, others can take their snotty looks and ...well... you know. Hmmm, maybe I'll wear the t-shirt that says "advice only welcome if you have a child with autism", lol
Kirsty-I have travelled over to Ireland quite a few times, often just me with the boys. Although the last time was summer 2006; prior to all the "no fluids in the carry on" rubbish. So, I'll have to bring empty cups and fill them up on the other side. Roan still nurses (not my choice but I'm not willing to battle weaning until after this trip) so I hope they don't arrest me for being a container over 3 fl oz, lol.
I like the idea of a small toy for each hour. Hopefully they'll sleep some going over; it'll be coming back that'll be tough (daytime flight).
I'll also have an umbrella stroller, but not a car seat as my Mum has two over there already. I am debating bringing the sit n stand stroller instead though as Cian does get fatigued easily. It's heavier, but I think I'll need it. I hope to get through the airport with one back pack, the kids harnesses, the stroller and we are all wearing crocs, lol. Thankfully anything I forget they have shops in Ireland, hee hee; and feck the exchange rate;)
Oh and I was looking at those squeaky shoes for Roan. Man I'm prepared;)
