since rylee turned 3 a few weeks ago shes done eith EI now and has moved on to the school system, i elected to wait till the new school yr for her to go to class, but we have started seeing a new speech therapist at a local elementary school. anywho im thinking Ry doesnt really need a speech therapist, she doesnt have an articulation problem, she has a severe pragmatics delay and mild receptive delay. and this speech therapist just seems clueless, like she probably spent the last 20 yrs helping NT kids say their R's, and L's correctly!

example of what i need help with..

Neither of my kids had articulation issues, but they both has problems with pragmatics,. receptive and expressive language and they both STILL receive speech therapy and have done for years.

So I Rylee definitely needs speech therapy. What may need now is a different speech *therapist*. You may want to contact the school district, express your concerns that this therapist may not be a good fit for Rylee and see if they will offer you more options. I think most will. Not every therapist is a perfect fit for every child. We had to fire one therapist when Peter was in EI. She wasn't a bad therapist, she was just wrong for him, you know?

rylee used to do the same thing, id ask how old are u and she would say rylee . but she finally answers im 3 yrs old (its hard to understand but thats what shes saying)

and yes she has a huuuuuge vocab now, she just isnt using it socially. she can label and tell u what just about anything is. thats whats most fustrating now, is we know she has the words we just want her to be able to form her thoughts and talk to us ;)

we so couldnt afford private therapy right now. so i guess we'll stick with what we got!

I wanted to echo what the other posters have said, plus stick in there that my son also has problems with abstract questions.

Liam only qualified for speech last Spring at age 7 and all for pragmatic language issues. His speech therapy is in a small group with others for the same reason so it's also like a bit of social skills too. I do think if he had received ST much earlier a great deal of frustration on his part could have been avoided.

Cian has been in speech for almost 3 years now; initially as he had very few understandable words and even then his articulation was awful (getting better but still tough).

It does sound like Rylee's current SLP needs to perform testing again to make sure the IEP goals for Rylee are appropriate. That's the route I'd go, request an IEP meeting to express your concerns and ask for another speech eval as a more up to date eval may spot the things you know about already.

I think that alot of ST do work with getting kids to make the correct pronunciations...however speech therapy can encompass alot more than pronunciation.

I'm not really adding anything new here, but a good ST will be able to help with the pragmatics issues.

My DD sees an SLP once a week (through EI) and they spend most of the time working on imaginary play, something that is pretty difficult for her anyway. Her SLP is trying to expand her vocab, and get her to use fewer scripts and generate more original thoughts/sentences. DD's vocab is huge now, too, but we hear the same things over and over (I said something to her today about something being tall, and she said "bridge, door, taaaalll mountain" LOL from her Dora video - had nothing to do with what we were talking about at the time)

You might just want to ask the ST what her plan is, and what she is working on, and see if it fits with the issues you think need to be addressed. And dont be afraid to change therapists if you dont like the answer.
