Kim,
Please do stick around here. That is what we are here for. Most of us originally came here bewildered and overwhelmed looking for advice and support. It takes a long time to figure this stuff out and to come to terms with it. My son is HFA so you are not the only one. here. Peter is older now -almost 10, but I remember back 5 years ;).
I don't know anything about P.L.A.Y. However I do think you should contact the school district, tell them you have a DX and enquire about an educational evaluation (and an occupational eval for sensory needs). My daughter is extremely high functioning, but she gets a lot of help from the school anyway. However, you don't get by not asking (bad doctor advice there). Most districts are looking at placement stuff now, so please get on that as soon as you can. They can only say no.
I have to go -kids fighting, but I hope this helps.
-Paula

Please do stick around, this is such a wonderful place for support and information.
With a child with a HFA dx, this board is meant for you. You don't say what area you are from, but someone else on the board might know of other resources in your area if you happen to be local to them. I'm in the Chicagoland area which has tons of resources available. Most metro areas do. Another resource for you would be local autism groups. You could check into those by doing a search on the internet. The school district might have some ideas for you too.
Welcome and hope to get to know you better.

I just wanted to say, 'yes, stick around!' My middle son(age11) is also HFA, in some ways able to handle more academic stuff than some kids here, but in other ways more delayed and more affected in social and language than others here. That's why it's a spectrum disorder-- each kid is affected differently. All the kiddos here have some issues and need help otherwise we wouldn't be here.
I also want to encourage you to call the school district and have them test and also talk about your options. Some high functioning kids might not need much intervention in most areas but there are always accommodations that they might benefit from. Also, my oldest DS isn't even Dx on the spectrum but has lots of similar issues. He originally was on a 504 plan (not the same as an IEP) and got some accommodations from the school district. Then in middle school when everything fell apart, he was already part of the system and we just moved him over to the IEP and started getting more services. the 504 plan is for students w/ some kind of disability. He has the medical Dx now so he qualifies. Please don't dismiss this as 'he's so high functioning that the school district won't do anything for him' it was affecting him enough to pursue the Dx, I'd pursue getting the school district to recognize that he may need services.
I'm also the mom to 5, ages 16 to 6. 3 are currently on IEPs. It's stressful sometimes but worth the work!
