My son is in a social group. We had a wait to get in also, but it's nice once it's set up. I hope you got on the waiting list for the one in 2 months.
In the meantime, lots of people have good luck with social stories. Part of the deal with social stories is that you have to read them over and over. Repetition is important. Once something sinks in and becomes routine with your kid, then you can move on to the next hurdle. There are books out there on how to write social stories but the premise is pretty self-explanatory. I read a really good explanation in a review of one of Carol Gray's books on Amazon.com. Search for social skills and a bunch of books will pop up. I bought The Hidden Curriculum and it was somewhat helpful in terms of ideas of what kind of situations need a story. If you don't want to buy the books, your local ASA chapter will probably have a lending library that you can access.
Repetition is key. Whether you're coaching or reading a social atory, an ASD kid is going to need many repetitions to get the concept whereas a NT kid might pick it up on the second time. It's a lot of hard work, but they can learn social skills. It's just not something that comes naturally, that's all.

We don't have access to any private social groups here or any autism resources to speak of unfortunately.
I didn't see the explanation for social stories in a review on Amazon. It was in The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood. Your library might be able to find it for you, although it's fairly new.
