My post under question of the week.

Oops I clicked start discussion and I clicked the lower one. So anyway my post is under the "Question of the week," topic.
I just wanted people to see it, since my meeting is tomorrow and of course I am posting this late...haha

OK, speech and sensory gym is good. How many minutes does he get per week? Does he need more?
Does he receive OT or is that the sensory gym? A lot is based on what the schools have to offer (shouldn't be that way but unfortunately it is). I would specifically be asking about a behavioural intervention plan (BIP) if that is a concern of yours. This should be tailored to your ds and his current difficulties. eg: Liam has a whole section on his bip about inappropriate language, and it has paid off.
I would also be asking about social skills. Some SLP's will use a pragmatic language session as a type of social skills therapy too. See if the district offers social skills through the guidance dept, and if not ask them why not. You will find a great deal of the behaviours you are concerned about stem from understanding social nuances, and the stress from not.
As for ABA, neither of my boys had it "officially" on their IEP, but I suspect all the spec ed teachers who deal with ASD's do used it in the classroom. Perhaps ask what ABA approaches the current teacher uses in the class, and how does ds respond to it?
I have to stop here as children are imploding around me, lol

yeah I am not sure what the deal is with the OT ? I have requested it over and over again. I keep getting the run around there, but yeah for me demanding the OT to be there tomorrow !!!! Finally I get to meet this lady. I heard it is hard to get services for OT for some reason.
The sensory gym is all he gets 3 times a week, but it is at the end of the day....what a joke...so we need to change that.
If he is reg ed and reg ed teacher is sloughing off on others (ie:YOU), then perhaps he needs a different placement. Liam currently is in SC k-3, and I think 3rd grade will be the big year for getting him into mainstream, but WITH lots of supports.
30 mins speech is v.little. Even Liam gets 60 mins as does Cian (4). Really push for the 60 mins.
If he is made to stay in reg ed, can we fight for an aide at the very leaast?
GL tomorrow,
Dee
Well, actually, if it is a GOOD aba person then I would go for it.
First, my background is as an ABA person, but a real one not just a discrete trial drill and kill.
Unfortunately, ABA is often misunderstood to be simply the discrete trial portion of ABA stuff which is more appropriate for very young children with autism or the more affected. HOWEVER ABA is much much more than that and can be very useful for aspies as well. Behavior support plans, functional analysis, checklists, etc are all products of ABA. ABA is Applied Behavioral Analysis which means they analyze the behavior of a specific individual and then implement certain strategies to address the behavior. Now to an ABA person EVERYTHING is behavior in a scientific sense not just "behavior problems" so learning is a behavior, etc.
You do not need a specific ABA person however to address his behavior. If it is a significant issue they should be writing a behavior plan for him in school. Check out the PENT website (PENT.org I think I have to look it up). It has all knds of information and even blank behavior plans available there.
So that was a big non answer.
Often ABA will be discrete trial drill and kill which really likely isn't appropriate for your son. What he is going to need is something like behavior support plans, checklists, cognitive behavior strategies.
Rather than asking for ABA I would ask for either an autism or behavioral consult type person.
Thank you thank you thank you !!!
roanmom- Yes Chad is in regular ed. I agree we have already been discussing a SC K-3 program. I think that is where he needs to be and should have been all year. It has been a nightmare of a year.
Good tip with the speech !!! I am going to bring up the times for next year. I think the issue was he was only in school for 3 hours this year, half day.
