Sick and autistic and a play, oh boy

Mike mentioned last night that his "mouth hurt". He was stimming big time last night pacing the hall and flapping when I had gone to bed. Made him take a epsom salt bath and melatonin. Still was a flappin and pacing until 11. I thought it was the play stress.

This morning he was way off and finally he growls (or tells me) that his throat is sore and his body hurts. I look in and knew right away it was NO BEUNO so I called the doc.

Now those that haven't been around for a bit don't know how Mike is with the doc. We haven't been in nearly 2 years (since his appendicitis) if that is any clue. He is generally healthy and HATES doctors. He only needs a physical every 2 years and getting him to go for that is a......challenge.

So I finally convince him by saying "dude it is either doctor today and a throat swab or in the hospital for scarlet fever". He chose the doctor today. So he obsesses all the way there on the throat swab, if he is going to have a shot, what the doctor is going to do, which doctor it is going to be, etc etc. (you know the drill of the same questions again and again right). Finally he convinces himself he is ok enough to do this and them starts his newest obsession about some other electronic one sided convo.

We get in and because it has been so long his friggen FILE is in STORAGE! All his info about being autistic, etc and I didn't bring a note with me. Since I am there I KNOW they won't check out his medic alert bracelet and it isn't our regular ped but rather a nice ped but an 8 month pregnant ped. OYE. I write a BIG note on his paperwork about the autism and fear of the doc and procedures and HOPE they pass it on as stated.

SOOOOO lady comes in, Mike does a good job while being way over pendantic and totally waving his autism flag. Phew actually. Then it comes to the tummy check (she thought either strep or mono) only I hadn't PREPPED mike for the tummy check. Nearly took out the pregnant lady. (blushing mom) He tried she tried I saw him loosing it and sure enough he turned on his side, started screaming and started swinging. She stopped and said, "it's ok, we can skip it today" and he calmed down. SHE MUST have seen his chart or recognized the signs but good move on her part.

He then proceeded to go back to his electronic obsession monologue (something about kingdom hearts videos on you tube I think").

Then I had to call the director for the play and give him the news. We had Mike go anyway (the show MUST go on and all). Told him not to touch or breathe on anyone and got him a script. He has another show tonight.

On the plus side he is being a real trooper about ti. trying so hard and taking loads and loads of ibuprofen and throat spray.

Here's the kicker! The director told me afterward that Mike did great. Would never know he was sick. Such a trooper. Then proceeded to praise me on my "Great kids" and what a great kid Mike is. Now I have NEVER told this guy Mike is autistic. I was too scared, lol. He does tell me "He is really quiet in rehearsal then he gets on stage and comes alive!". LOLOL. Mike is trying REALLY hard to hold it in at rehearsal, plus everything goes so fast I am sure he is quiet because he is trying to process and learn everything. And as far as coming alive on stage....well lets just say his character is his alter ego...or rather his regular self.

So here's to Mike, on really odd duck who keeps my life interesting and to one very autistic/surreal day. Only SN parents can get the surreal-ness of a child nearly taking out the pregnant lady then getting praised an hour later for perfect behavior. I don't get it.

(((hugs))) I'm glad he's doing so well w/ his play, what a trooper. I'm so sorry he's sick and had to endure the Dr. (poor pregnant lady) at least she had sense enough to know when enough was enough!

Only reason I took him was it was her. She has seen the kids before and is really wonderful. I like her second to our own doc. The one other lady there is pretty good but the 2 guy doctors. OH BOY, not my faves.

But she had the sense to know when to duck and quit. Very important!

Exactly Susan, The fact that he did so well and only had that one outburst was a huge improvement. I was actually proud of him. And he DID tell us that he didn't like it and wanted to stop before he started a swinging so our own fault.

I used to try to make the kids do all what the doc wanted them to do but honest, we have learned we only do that absolute neccessary

I can picture the jump off the table and agree, funny now but probably not then.

It sound like you had quite an interesting day! I'm glad that Mike made it through the doctor visit and that the doctor seemed to understand. It's great that Mike did so well during the play, especially under the circumstances!

When Tom was about 2, his doc was pregnant, and he crawled under the exam table to hide
