For those of you using melatonin, where do you get it?

I get mine at Trader Joes. 500 mcg mild peppermint flavored chewables. My kids are 7 and 9 and they each take one at bedtime.

How old is your child?

3 mg seems like a lot for a 3 yr old.

The 3 mg would be the extended release formula, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Tina,

Source naturals do an extended release version. It is 3mg. Although it doesn't explicitly state this on the bottle; I think it needs to be swallowed (which is typical for a ER tablet) Can Bobby (or the 3yo) swallow a pill?

We tried the 3 mg extended release, but Weston kind of was overly mellow the next couple of days. Like it was extending too long. He also has a hard time w/ his gag reflex and a couple of times he threw up violently which made it worse. We decided it wasn't worth it and went back to just taking 1mg or even 1/2 a tablet in the chewables. He doesn't always have a hard time going to sleep anymore so he only takes it when he's really crawling out of his skin or can't slow down at bedtime.

My kids use Source Naturals orange flavored liquid melatonin. One ml dropperful equals 1 mg. We usually use about 1/2 mg for 40-lb 4yo dd and 1 mg for 75-lb 11yo ds. Some kids need much more than others, but you might want to start at the lower dose, then work your way up to the higher dose if the lower doses aren't working. I've read (but haven't experienced) that a too high dose can sometimes cause nightmares. I get my melatonin through an online pharmacy. I pay about $5-6 for a 2-oz bottle (approx 59 1-ml servings).

I think all melatonin says it's not for kids, but if you google melatonin, you'll see several medical studies that show it's safe for children, even in large doses (I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think a lot of the studies were done at 5mg and 10mg doses). I think the manufacturers just want to play it safe.
