My favorite tips & tricks:

1. Educate yourself. Trawl the libraries and the internet for books and articles.

2. Don't compare your special need kid(s) to typical children. Compare him (or her) to him (or her) self 3, 6, 12 months ago. That way you appreciate the progress made and the difficulties overcome instead of beating yourself up that s/he isn't like the "normies".

3. Praise praise praise your child for good behavior and for doing stuff right or unprompted. Don't just expect them to do everything right and then pick out the things they do wrong, That way, all they will hear from you is negative commentary. This is particularly important for attention seekers. If you praise good behavior, they know that you *notice* them and are less likely to act out in search of negative attention.

I'm sure there is more, but I am tired.
