I'm glad he got in! and it sounds like he would have had to cope with changing classes etc in a 'normal' middle school, and they should have some ideas for how to help him with that. I hope they can help him better achieve his academic potential. And it does sound like, socially, he should fit in there better than in a standard school - they probably have quite a few fellow Aspies! (Does the playground have a flappy-corner? just kiddin :-)
He's growing up!

That's exactly how I felt w/ Weston when they recommended him for AGP (academically gifted program) in 4th and 5th grades. In 4th grade they just put him in the math portion-- that was perfect, he was w/ a whole lot of little professor types and he fit in well, the teacher was great as well and didn't hurt that he was a Green Bay Packer fan--one of Weston's obsessions-- and would include packers stats in his word problems).
We had issues w/ Weston's AGP teacher in 5th grade because she refused to believe that he had difficulty in understanding how to write, that he had so many significant sensory issues, and that he couldn't think beyond the concrete yet even tho he was so advanced in his reading. Basically, she refused to believe that a child could be gifted and autistic-- BLEH!!! The principal sounds wonderful and like she'd keep this problem from getting out of hand!
I so hope he does well in this program! You can always tweak the IEP often until it works for him.
We're pulling Weston from the honors/AGP class in LA next year. This year it's been a disaster and I think he'll do better w/o the extra reading assignments and writing.
