Interesding findings

Well, almost 8 weeks ago we took Rece off of Dairy. Mostly b/c he used to get horrible rashes on his behind that turned into a staph infection. Pretty much constantly. We were hoping for behavior improvements but that wasn't the reason. Well he has not had a rash in almost 8 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY for that. But I want to test it out and see if he can handle any amounts of dairy. So on Monday and Tuesday I gave him some milk. He had a little on monday morning and a little more on tuesday for lunch. The rash never came back, but I am assuming b/c it wasn't in his system long enough plus he only had maybe 3/4 cup total. He used to chug milk, so it kind of tells me something that he didn't really want it. But the interesting thing is on Monday he started doing some major arm flapping. He never did this before, even when he had milk. So I have no idea why it started now. But when it started I didn't even connect it with the milk. But then Tuesday the amr flapping continued and on top of that he lost everything b/c he just would not listen. He lost his pre-nap play time, he lost books before bed, he lost his movie etc. So even though we didn't think it affected his behavior, it apparantly did! And now looking back I remember over the last few weeks, a few things just seem to have sunk in for him. Maybe it was the milk? He finally started to understand the rewards system. Like if you do this, then you get this. I just thought he finally "got it". So now, I still want to test it to see if he can handle any amounts. Or maybe he can handle it if it is baked in something like bread. But I am not quite sure of how to go about this, any suggestions or words of advice?

How old is he? because when DS1 and 2 were dairy allergic (and really allergic, not just intolerant) the advice we got was to keep them off it completely until they hit 4 or older, then reintroduce it gradually. Once they are older the immune system is more robust and you can 'train' it better to not overrespond. If you do it younger, all you are doing is triggering off the overreaction again and it may get worse instead of better. In both cases it worked and they can now tolerate dairy (DS2 likes it, DS1 hates it but it doesn't give him an allergic reaction anymore), but when they were allergic even little bits would set them off (rashes, vomiting, cramps and resulting poor behaviour).

I wouldn't necessarily link the hand flapping to dairy though, unless it made him feel ill and he had to stim to compensate - it's likely that was just a coincidence.

Well he is 3. But we know he is not actually allergic. We had allergy testing done. It is just an intolerance.

That's great that you've seen some positive results with removing dairy.

That will be our next stop. My husband has celiac's disease so we are very familiar to gluten free living. But we knew dairy would be easiest on Rece to remove so we started there. And we wanted to do one at a time in case only one was making a difference. I think we are going to wait until June or so to start that. We are just trying to adjust one step at a time :)
