My baby has terrible eye contact

My 3 year old son has ASD, and I have a new little boy, Magnus, who is almost 12 weeks old. I feel like I am drowning as he seems to have developed terrible eye contact. I swear a couple of weeks ago he was looking at me a lot and giving HUGE smiles. I was soooo happy since getting good eye contact with my oldest is hard and fleeting at best. He got a cold or maybe allergies flaired a couple of weeks ago and now he doesn't look at me at all hardly. I swear I didn't catch his eye and hold it ONCE all day today. He looks everywhere but at me. I will sit there or hover over him calling his name and he ignores me. No interest. He gives lots of social smiles but there are at things. They were at people a couple of weeks ago...now he just looks right past you. My stomach is in knots and I'm getting devastated more and more each day. Does this mean anything? Could he still be "typical"? I know he is super young, but my heart is just sinking.

While I agree with Lainie to a good extent, if you are worried you should call the dev. ped.

I agree with Lori. Time spent worrying is time that could be more usefully spent enjoying your kids. Whether you worry about it or not isn't going to change the outcome, so what's the point? My ASD kid had perfect eye contact, my NT was referred to a specialist because he had lousy eye contact and smiling. Turned out ASD kid was watching me assiduously trying to figure scary world out and NT kid just didn't like smiling at health professionals. Still doesn't! 12 weeks is waaaay too young to be able to be able to pick up anything that isn't physical. Relax, and enjoy your kids, and keep an eye on milestones and mention your concerns to your paediatrician.
