we got dried beans at our local grocery store...i think I got them in the spanish section...i think goya maybe...but they should also be where the rice and stuff is...try that section..or just ask someone...we got navy beans...or something like that...i can't remember....but ask someone at the store...you definatly don't have to order that stuff online...

we also use rice in a bin...but it gets very messy....and beads work well too!! but we can't leave any of that stuff out where gabe can just go get it because he puts everything in his mouth..and I am sure he would eat the beads...

can't wait to see your sensory room..that sounds awesome...

I get a BIG bag of Pinto at costco down the rice, etc aisle. I actually do cook my own beans homemade. It is easy and cheap with a pressure cooker.

Get a variety of dry beans and peas for him and he can sort, count and experience the different textures.

Renee, that's a great idea about the sizes/textures.

I often cook w/ dried beans-- yummy and cheap and really good for you w/ no added anything.

I buy them at the natural food store in bulk, when we lived in Wisconsin we had a 'bulk foods store' that would just measure them out for you if you wanted a huge amount, rather than buying just a 1lb pkg. I'm sure Sam's club probably had huge bags of them as well-- I've never really noticed though.

The classroom I was in this year for a long term sub position had dried beans/colored rice/multi shaped pastas/sand in their sand/water table. We would hide plastic sharks, dinosaurs, animals, shapes in it for them to find. They would use sand sifters or sieves or pasta strainers for them to sift the sand and rice out. We also cut various sized holes in the bottom of yogurt containers for them to sift the beans through. They would use little bamboo tongs to pick up various sizes and sort w/ them into sectioned vegetable trays.

Ohhhh good idea Betsy! I am ready to trade out the sand table for rice again. I put a huge 15 pound bag of rice in it at the begining of the year but traded out for sand a few months back.

we have a dinosaur theme this week and I am digging some fossils, but after that i am going to add some beans and pasta and make different sized holes in yogurt cups. FUN FUN!
