Jessie,

Well, if you are anything like I was, you will be a wreck for awhile. I totally expected the DX but it still threw me for a complete loop. I back up what Ginny said in my own way: Take a deep breath, try to look after you, and don't tie yourself in knots about it. Nothing has changed. Gabe was always on the Spectrum. The only difference is now you know for sure, you can put more assistance in place for him.

Next steps: Get it in writing. Get a written report from the neuro with educational recommendations (such as speech therapy, OT, special school full or half day or whatever) that will be useful to have.

I can't remember if Gabe was evaluated through the school district and what services he receives there? He should probably qualify for a special preschool, which will help him a lot (if it's a good school) My next step would be to contact the district about that ASAP to secure a place for September (and you may get services through the summer too). The district will want to do their own evaluation if he is not on their radar yet. They generally don't diagnose, but will identify areas of need. Have the neuro report on hand durign the IEP meeting. They do have to take that into consideration when assessing Gabe's needs.
I would call now to get the evaluation set up if possible. The eval will take some time, and by the time you have the IEP meeting, you should have your paperwork from the doctor.

I hope this helps. ((((((hugs)))))) to you. It seems to me that this has come down pretty quickly on you. You haven't been here very long at all, and Boom! DX. I feel for you.

Gabe has been in therapy since he was 2.5 years...and the whole time it was back and forth with the ASD thing...we did have a school eval...this is how it went...less then one hour done...three or four people eval'd him at the same time he did nothing for them...and bam it was over...they did go to his school for oh, about 30 min and said...he seems like the other kids...we are just going to give him speech...and there you have it....all the school gives gabe is 2 days a week of 1:1 speech that I had to fight to get...and they still don't think he needs the preschool class...i disagree and so did his EI ST but we don't have he to support us anymore.....his school ST said she felt he was on the spectrum awhile back...and now that his neuro has said this I think she is going to try to help me out....i want him in the school program to work on social skills...but i don't know if that is going to happen...gabe does not have cognative delay...and i don't think they are going to help him...honestly our schools Sped program could use some revamping....

so tomorrow I am going to talk again to his ST....she what she found out...right now I have one huge headache...and I still need to aply for medicaid for gabe...so I should start doing that...apparently in Pa you can get medicaid if you have ASD...which is great for getting more therapy...

I might have more questions in time....in fact I know I will....

thanks everyone for all your help...

I live in york pa...and thank you for that website...i think I am going to need that...the neuro didn't write any recommendations...she wants us to see the psych...but said if i got no where with that there is a person in hershey that we should go to....

gabe goes to daycare two days a week and the rest of the time he is with me at home....so i don't know if he needs a TSS...it would be great for the communication end of...being that gabe hardly talks....so maybe that is something I will look into...my mom owns the daycare...so gabe does get a little spoiled...and he seems to follow what the teacher says....like when they do circle time and all that...he doesn't always sit for circle...but I don't think she does a very long one...mostly they play...his daycare does keystone stars....maybe i will take him to daycare this morning and see what kind of day he is having...then i can kind of watch....

i was going to apply for medicaid online...did you do it that way...or via the mail?
