So ds's IEP meeting for next years goals is next week. I was hoping that I could get a guy from another local school who is trained in helping aspy kids come and throw in some pointers. I got a email today saying that the system will not let him attend a IEP meeting outside the district. So much BS.....

From what I know no one can be denied attending an IEP meeting if the parents have invited them. ( I am thinking of private therapists/consultants etc). I would think banning him is dodgy at he very least, even if he is employed by the next door county. I mean technically if our cuurent district can't accommodate ds we would be allowed look at other districts; all this is according to IDEA too. I suspect you are being bullied!

Can you have a meeting or exchange emails with the Aspie expert before your IEP? Even a phone call so that he can give you tips on accommodations and such. I personally would wreak havoc on the school until they consented to letting him attend. Call superintendent, special ed director, threaten to call the state etc. When are these guys going to figure out that THEIR lives will be easier as well if the child's needs are met? As far as hoping the next year's teacher will take the advice of the IEP.... It is a legal document and it must be followed or they are in noncompliance and can get in trouble for it. That is why it is so important to make sure goals and strategies are clear and measurable. If you want them to follow certain steps in the event of a melt down put in in writing in the form of a behavior plan and put it in the IEP that the behavior plan will be followed whenever a meltdown occurs. Don't give them any wiggle room. My ds was being shipped to the principal on a regular basis up until 3rd grade when I insisted on the behavior plan. These kids don't need punishment. They have a disability.

Well the other school emailed me back this morning. Turns out that our school is considered in the same district and that he may be able to attend. DS goes to a private school so the rules there are a little different. The school is ran buy the parents and it is not governmentally funded. The guy that is going to come speak though is also from a private school. The only difference is that his school is considered in the city school district. Oh well, I will cross my fingers on this one.
