Weston's IEP meeting
Thu, 04-24-2008 - 4:30pm

We had Weston's transition IEP meeting yesterday-- in our district there is a 6th grade middle school campus and then a different campus for 7th & 8th grade.

This year started VERY rough for him, transitioned to rocky and awful and finally has been only a little bumpy the last couple of months. I went from exchanging emails 3x a day to only about once a week now. He's only leaving class about 2x a week and this resource teacher has only been called in to deal w/ a full blown meltdown 4x since spring break-- 3 weeks ago.

The resource teacher and all his regular ed teachers have come a long way in learning how to make Weston's environment work well for him. They've adapted homework to almost nothing and he's still learning and doing well w/o the busy work. (his test scores continue to be in the A range, his standardized test scores are still in the 98%ile range).

So.... new school, new set of everybody! The resource teacher/placement chair at the middle school had Warren (totally different kid w/ different issues). She's also been around a long time (6 yrs 'til retirement). I've talked w/ her concerning Weston before, but yesterday she had a very "deer in the headlights" look at that meeting. She's not at all sure of herself when it comes to Weston and I'm really concerned that she'll be able to get those teachers to make the same kinds of adaptations and accommodations w/o a fight. Anyway, she kept asking for all the info, and finally they set up a date for her to come and follow Weston and the resource teacher for 1/2 a day to see all the things om action. We added a whole page of accommodations and things that we do for Weston-- but I'm sure it wasn't everything. AND they wouldn't add 'autism training' for all the teachers he sees. At least the OT will train them for an hour before school starts.

DARN IT! I just want something to be easy for once. I want my kid to benefit from some else going before him, instead of him being the trailblazer. (they talked about how the elementary school is opening up another autism classroom at X elementary school for kids who are high functioning and inclusion & transition help.)
