Hi my youngest ds is David 10.He has pdd-nos adhd sensory issues and a speech delay. This is what happened at school today.I was up there helping judge kids in the gym during there p.e. time for our schools talent show.

Well David came in during his p.e. time he was bored totally understandable. So he got the gym teacher to let him go to the office to cool off.Well he really wasn't angery.Well he came back to class and then left when the classes went back to there rooms.Well we had a few more kids come in and we had a small break time.

So I went out of the gym for quiet time.Well on the way back I see my ds going to the lunch room by himself. It was 11:45 and his lunch time is 12:00.They are really strict about lunch times at this school.Well I watched for a few seconds. He was just kind of standing in there not really knowing what to do.So I came in and asked him why are you going to lunch so early?Your lunch is at 12:00 where are you supposed to be?He says I don't know I was supposed to be following Noah.So I ask again what class are you supposed to be in and he said the same.So I tell him you are suppose to be in sped I believe right now.He then told me on the way out of class he went to the office and stayed in there for awhile.

They had no idea when he left when I latter went in to ask what happened.I took him to the sped teacher he had already been in her class earlier that day so she knew he was there.Well she said that was weird I was wondering

I posted a reply to this already and it is gone!

While at school, the school is responsible for the health and safety or your child -any child. There is no way that I would think it is a safe condition to allow a special needs kid to completely fall of the radar for a full 30 minutes. What if he had gotten out of the building? (just because he never did before doesn't mean the won't be a first time).

I would definitely raise my concerns. And probably to the principal, not just the teacher.

well coming from experience from both sides I can see how this can happen. It is scary, it is unfortunate and it tells you something new to address and look out for but I wouldn't go blaming either David or the teachers yet.

It is not uncommon kids are taken out of school for an appointment, go home sick, get a booboo and go to the nurse, or they have some classroom thing and miss their learning center/resource time. I am doing some work right now as a resource teacher and often we go to pick up kids from class and they aren't there. Sometimes the whole class isn't there and the gen ed teachers often forget to tell us when they have this or that come up. Other times kids have gone to the nurse ill from lunch, etc.

Considering David had done very well the entire year and that it is a fairly common occurance for kids to miss for one reason or another I can see how the teacher likely wouldn't be concerned on the first time.

However, now that this has happened then it is definitely time to address it.

When Cait was 3rd grade and 4th grade she was a big wanderer. She even wandered off school campus on more than one occasion. The first time it was a heads up that this could happen. After that and when she left campus and a bunch of adults were around and never questioned, that is when I got pissed.

I would get together with the sped teacher and come up with a plan to make sure it doesn't happen again. perhaps social stories for David of what to do if he doesn't know where to go or ends up in a situation like that.

Good luck.

I have to wonder why the office staff didn't question why he was there.

Hi there I do understand this as I do sub there. The only thing is she knows my son well.In the past years he was not able to be trusted to go to her class on his own. This is the first year that he has done so well getting to her class on his own.I do know something has to change as he should not be allowed to just go to the office with no one knowing.

Also all the other 3rd graders that she has at that time where there.Including one that is also from ds class. So she knew nothing special was going on. Also David has not left early all year due to being sick.I am really good at keeping him home when he is sick. Also as far as do appointments go.They don't happen till the end of the day.Its too hard to transitions him back into school for a DR's appointment.

When David leaves his specials he goes and gets his lunch if he brought it.David goes to his locker on his own that is outside his geneds teachers room. Then he puts his lunch in a locker outside

See that's another part of the problem that needs to be addressed. The office staff never know if he is suppose to be there or not. They have only been told if he shows up and has told them he is upset to let him stay till he calms down.So they had no idea what was going down.So communication could be so much better.I will hope this will be taken care of soon.Oh and trust me they know David.I sub up there at the school and my oldest kiddo started

I was wondering about that too.She did kept saying how odd it was that my ds was not there. So she knew it was out of the ordinary for my kiddo. My kiddo never has dr's appointments in the middle of the school day.Its too hard to bring him back to school with out a fight. Also this is the first year that they have trusted him to go to class on his own.

So after specials his goes to his locker outside his gened teachers room if he brought his lunch for the day. Then he goes and puts his lunch in a locker right outside his sped teachers room.

The principal said they would take care of this.I am sure they will.I am just wondering how hard it would have been to just call the gened teacher? She had all of 5 kids and an assistant in her class. So she could have had her do that as well.

She has had my kiddo for at least 2 years and knows that David can do well but then something gets in his head and wham he will just go along with what ever it is.So I think maybe she had gotten used to David do what he should and wham he changes things on her again. He is really good at that.He can do really well for weeks
