Hi everyone,

Sorry I'm such a fair weather friend but like alwayd life is crazy. The kids are doing great and this school year was great for Jake. He made a few friends and seem much more "with it" these days. Ella, well I just don't know. I'm still on the fence with that one. She is still getting OT and PT so that's good. I tried to make an appointment with the developmental ped last week for Ella and they told me to call back in a month to make an appointment! Anyway getting to the point of this post....Jake has an IEP meeting coming up soon (first one with school district) and I talked to the school psyc today and asked what they would be doing for Jakes social skills and he said the school district don't do anything for social skills. He is already getting 3 afternoons a week at the I.U which has helped him so much, I know he still needs this. What is the law regarding this?

I would love to know the law on this too - in our case, ds (9) qualifies for "pragmatic speech therapy" which is a small pragmatics group at school (3 kids). He qualified for this based on some test - I can look the test up if you need to the know the exact one. It is basically a social skills group. This is once a week for 20 minutes. He also has an articulation session once a week for 20 minutes. However, we are on a communications IEP so the law may be different with a different IEP qualification. Our school does not have any social skills programs, but may start some next year. My son sees a private SLP once a week with 2 other boys for social skills in addition to the school stuff. I am really interested in hearing from others what there schools offer for social skills!

Hi,

I have a little time to respond before my kids start waking.

The school must provide social skills if you child needs them. They cannot decide as a district if they "do that" or not. I would recommend writing a note to

It is my understanding that the school district must provide the services that your child needs in order to get his "appropriate" education.

This doesn't really address schools, but Jeremy goes to group therapy every week (at least, as far as our insurance company is concerned), but it is really a social skills therapy.
